About This Position
The Passionists established spiritual centers as spaces for people to come apart from their daily lives and practice spiritual exercises, contemplation, and personal reflection. More specifically, the centers are to manifest the mission of the Passionists and their Charism. The Passionist Congregation is a 300-year-old Roman Catholic international community of Priests and Brothers. The Passionists sponsor a network of Spiritual Centers in the United States and globally which create spaces for people to receive hospitality and renewal through programs offered.
Holy Family Passionist Retreat Center, located in West Hartford, CT, is a spiritual center in the Passionist tradition, open since 1951 to all who seek to deepen their relationship with God and one another. Holy Family is seeking a Controller to join their Finance team.
Position Overview:
The Holy Family Controller is a well-versed finance leader and analytical thinker with excellent organizational skills and a drive for results. As a critical part of the Holy Family Finance Office, the Controller reports to the VP of Finance for Passionist Spiritual Places. The position will be responsible for supporting the VP of Finance and working alongside other Holy Family Finance Office team members in carrying out the financial and administrative related responsibilities of the organization.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee day-to-day accounting functions of accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger, and cash flow management
- Direct and supervise the preparation of all financial reports – including monthly annual, and budgeted financial statements
- Direct and supervise the preparation of all financial reports for grant/contract requirements
- Support the VP of Finance for Passionist Spiritual Places in the development of annual budgets and periodic financial forecasts
- Conducts month-end closing process including financial statement preparation, monitor actual results against budget, and provide variance analysis
- Prepares weekly cash flow activity reports
- Ensures the complete, accurate and timely recording of journal entries
- Reconciles balance sheet accounts
- Evaluates current processes and internal controls and recommend improvements
- Coordinate external auditors, and serve as the primary liaison with them
- Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal government requirements
- Supervise and mentor personnel within the Finance Department
- Assume additional managerial duties as appropriate to the position
- Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Finance and prior nonprofit finance experience with a successful track record in a Senior Financial Management role leading a team for at least 8+ years is essential
- Strong understanding of GAAP, particularly for non-profits
- Technology savvy with the ability to manage data for financial reporting quickly and effectively
- Proficiency in Oracle required, Familiarity with AccuFund a plus
- Advanced Excel skills including macros (VBA), linking cells/tabs within the same workbook and how to link cells between different workbooks, naming cells for linking to other tab/workbooks, creating and managing functions (Fx) such as Vlookups, double Vlookups, If, then, else functions, concatenate, etc.
- Knowledge of CSV files and how they work, and converting them to Excel files
- Knowledge of how to download/upload files between different financial systems
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office products (Word, Outlook) and an aptitude for learning new software required
- Extreme flexibility with a strong work ethic and an entrepreneurial spirit to accommodate multiple priorities
- Demonstrated ability to set priorities, manage a variety of tasks and projects simultaneously and meet deadlines
- Excellent written and oral communications skills; must be able to communicate ideas and issues effectively and concisely to all levels within the organization
- Must be able to work flexible hours beyond the normal schedule when necessary
