The Director of Consulting will build and lead a world-class consulting organization. This leader will establish the consulting vision, service offerings, and delivery methodologies from the ground up. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in distribution and fulfillment operations, advanced data analysis, and the strategic application of automated technology to maximize customer ROI.
This role will own the consulting practice—including operational assessments, technology evaluation, business case development, and simulation modeling—and will ensure high-quality, insight-driven recommendations that help customers transform their supply chain operations.
OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES
Consulting Practice Leadership
- Build the consulting organization from inception, including service portfolio, processes, tools, staffing strategy, and delivery standards.
- Develop a scalable methodology for operational assessments, solution recommendations, and ROI-driven business cases.
- Lead strategic engagements with key clients, ensuring recommendations align with the customer’s operational goals and financial objectives.
- Establish thought leadership in warehousing, distribution, fulfillment, and automation strategy.
- Partner with Sales and Senior Leadership to align consulting efforts with company strategy and growth initiatives.
Operational Analysis & Solution Development
- Perform and oversee the analysis of customer operational data to translate complex data sets into actionable insights regarding throughput, labor utilization, storage capacity, and system performance.
- Evaluate and recommend automated material handling technologies (e.g., AS/RS, GtP, AMRs/AGVs, sortation, conveyance, robotics, software) based on operational need and ROI potential.
- Partner with engineering, sales, and software teams to validate solutions and ensure cross-functional alignment.
Simulation Modeling & Scenario Analysis
- Lead the simulation modeling function, ensuring delivery of accurate, high-fidelity models that visualize system behavior and predict performance outcomes.
- Establish standards and best practices for simulation tools, modeling assumptions, throughput analysis, and scenario testing.
- Present simulation findings to internal and external stakeholders, articulating key drivers, risks, and performance expectations.
Client Engagement & Executive Communication
- Serve as the strategic advisor to senior clients, helping them navigate automation options, operational transformation, and long-term distribution strategies.
- Deliver compelling presentations that distill complex technical and financial information into clear, executive-ready narratives.
- Guide customers through investment decisions with confidence, grounded in well-supported analysis and business case logic.
Team Development & Leadership
- Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing consulting and simulation team.
- Foster a culture of analytical rigor, innovation, and operational excellence.
- Manage resource planning, workload balancing, and performance standards.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS REQUIREMENTS
- 10+ years of experience in consulting, solution design, or operational leadership within distribution, fulfillment, or automated material handling environments.
- Deep knowledge of warehouse operations, supply chain best practices, and automation technologies.
- Expertise in advanced data analysis (Excel, Power BI, SQL, Python/R).
- Significant experience leading simulation modeling activities (FlexSim preferred).
- Proven track record of building or scaling a consulting or solutions organization.
- Strong financial acumen with the ability to quantify ROI, TCO, and business case justification for complex capital investments.
- Exceptional communication skills, including executive presentation and client-facing leadership.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with system integration firms, automation OEMs, or operations-focused consulting organizations.
- Familiarity with WMS/WES/WCS platforms and software-driven automation.
- Professional certifications (e.g., Six Sigma, PMP, CSCP) are a plus.
- Engineering, Supply Chain, Industrial Engineering, or Operations Management degree (Master’s preferred).
WORK CONDITIONS
- Travel required (up to 50%) for client consultations, presentations, and site visits.
- Combination of office and field-based work; flexible remote options available.
