Job Description
Assistant Editor
Skills and Qualifications
At a time of growing industry uncertainty and an alarming erosion of civic discourse, The Dispatch stands out as a platform for thoughtful coverage, respectful dialogue, and a wildly engaged community of paying members. We bring a perspective—we’re conservatives, classical liberals, libertarians—but we’re fiercely independent, standing apart from media outlets increasingly engaged in partisan boosterism. Started in 2019 by Steve Hayes, the Editor-in-Chief of The Weekly Standard, and Jonah Goldberg, editor at National Review, The Dispatch has filled a valuable gap on the center-right in the media ecosystem as captured in articles in Vanity Fair, The Atlantic and other publications.
About the RoleThe Assistant Editor will play a key role on The Dispatch’s editing team. Reporting to the Executive Editor, a successful candidate will have a strong grasp of American politics and policy, but also the flexibility to edit content on a range of subjects. An obsessive focus on detail and accuracy is crucial, as is the ability to see the big picture and provide substantive and structural edits. The Assistant Editor will exclusively focus on editing, fact-checking, and preparing articles for publication in The Dispatch.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Edit newsletters, and stand-alone articles from outside contributors and Dispatch staffers for accuracy, grammar, style, and content.
- Produce and prepare articles for publication in The Dispatch’s content management system, which includes building and scheduling for publication, and editing audio and podcast descriptions.
- Play a crucial role in The Dispatch’s daily editorial process by attending editorial meetings, contributing to discussions, and shouldering a busy editing and production workload during end-of-day rushes. Evening work and some weekend work required.
- One year minimum of editing experience.
- Familiarity with American politics, public policy, and the media landscape.
- Exceptional copy-editing and proofreading skills and meticulous attention to detail.
- Resourcefulness, organization, and an ability to learn quickly and multitask. Familiarity with the Associated Press stylebook is a plus.
Please submit a one-page cover letter and a resume.
