About This Position
Job Summary:
The Senior SMT Technician is responsible for advanced operation, setup, troubleshooting, and maintenance of Surface Mount Technology (SMT) equipment in a high-reliability manufacturing environment.
This role serves as a senior-level technical expert on the production floor, providing guidance, mentorship, and process improvement support to ensure optimal equipment performance, product quality, and on-time delivery. The Senior SMT Technician works closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, and Quality teams to resolve complex issues and support continuous improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Program, setup, operate, and troubleshoot SMT production equipment, including Yamaha pick-and-place machines, printers, and reflow ovens.
- Execute complex machine setups, changeovers, and process validations with minimal oversight.
- Diagnose and resolve equipment, material, and process-related issues to minimize downtime and scrap.
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on SMT equipment.
- Serve as a technical resource for SMT technicians by providing training, mentorship, and hands-on support.
- Support new product introductions (NPI), including process development, first article builds, and optimization.
- Review production data, yields, and defect trends; recommend and implement corrective actions.
- Ensure all work complies with safety, ESD, quality, and regulatory requirements, including applicable IPC standards and customer specifications.
- Collaborate with Engineering, Quality, and Manufacturing teams on process improvements and technical problem-solving.
- Participate in root cause analysis and support implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
- Accurately complete and review production records, logs, and reports.
- Support departmental and companywide initiatives and perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Strong working knowledge of SMT manufacturing processes, equipment, and materials.
- Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot and resolve complex SMT equipment and process issues.
- Ability to read and interpret work instructions, process documentation, and technical drawings.
- High attention to detail with a commitment to quality and safety standards.
- Ability to mentor and support other technicians in a team-oriented manufacturing environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 5+ years of hands-on SMT manufacturing experience, preferably in aerospace, defense, or other regulated industries.
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical training or certifications preferred.
- Experience programming and troubleshooting Yamaha SMT equipment.
- Familiarity with IPC standards (e.g., IPC-A-610, IPC-7711/7721).
- Experience supporting new product introduction (NPI) and continuous improvement initiatives.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods and frequently perform tasks that require repetitive motion, such as typing on a keyboard.
- Regular use of a computer, telephone, and headset is required, including participation in virtual meetings via Microsoft Teams.
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs and move throughout production and office areas.
- Manual dexterity and visual acuity required to work with small electronic components and precision equipment.
- This is primarily an office-based role located within a shared open-concept office inside a warehouse facility. The work environment may include elevated noise levels due to open workspaces and conversational noise. Employees should be comfortable working in a setting where sound carries and interruptions may occur.
