About This Position
A.T. Still University's Arizona School of Health Sciences (ATSU-ASHS) is seeking an exempt Director of Clinical Education for Physical Therapy on the Mesa, Arizona campus. This position reports to the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program Director.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Responsibilities include teaching, scholarship, academic and research advising, clinical practice in the pro bono Center for Occupational and Physical Therapy, and service.
- Secure approximately 310 clinical placements each year in collaboration with the co-Director, Clinical Education. These responsibilities are shared equally between the 2 co-directors.
- Develop strong partnerships with community clinics and hospitals to ensure adequate clinical placements.
- Meet with new and existing partners to understand the clinical site and available learning opportunities
- Vet new sites to ensure quality of learning opportunities.
- Collaborate with leadership, including the site coordinator of clinical education to secure clinical placements for student experiences.
- Develop strong collegial relationships with clinical instructors to ensure excellence in teaching in the clinical environment to facilitate student growth and retention.
- Meet regularly with clinical instructors to evaluate student performance.
- Provide support for clinical instructors when students are not meeting performance expectations.
- Support the development of clinical instructors through continuing education and individual consulation.
- Develop strong relationships with students to ensure appropriate support for students while they are on clinical experiences.
- Ensure adequate student learning.
- Help students resolve conflicts with the clinical site or clinical instructor.
- Develop learning plans for students who are struggling.
- Develop remediation plans for students who fail clinical experiences.
- Develop clinical education experiences for students who are on decelerated academic plans.
- Develop a strong collegial relationship with the co-director of clinical education to ensure all job responsibilities are met for the clinical placement of students.
- Develop strong collegial relationships with core physical therapy faculty to assess student performance including readiness for clinical education and performance while on clinical experiences.
- Develop strong collegial relationships with administrative support personnel within the PT department.
- Work collaborative with departments and personnel who support clinical education at the university including, but not limited to the ASHS Office of Clinical Affairs.
- Gather, manage and analyze data that contributes to accreditation reports and maintenance.
Education & Experience:
- Licensed or eligible for physical therapy licensure in Arizona
- Experience as a clinical instructor and a site coordinator of clinical education highly desirable
- Doctoral degree (DPT) and at least 5 years of clinical experience
- Excellent communication skills with colleagues and entry-level DPT students
- Experience teaching in a classroom environment
- Must show professionalism; collegiality; calm and understanding demeanor; strong organization skills, team-work oriented, Internally motivated with strong work ethic; excellent leadership skills; ability to communicate and interact well with others.
