SUMMARY

The Prepared Foods Shift Lead ensures that the Prepared Foods Departments including Kitchen, Bakery and Cafe are running efficiently and effectively at all times. This position is responsible for delegating and assigning daily tasks, support staff members training, enforcing best department and store practices, preparing menu offerings, ensuring the Prepared Foods Departments are properly stocked with products and that exceptional customer service is being delivered. This position should carry a strong knowledge of natural foods and prepared food offerings. This position will assist the Prepared Foods Manager in achieving short- and long-range tactics and goals.

  • Understand the requirements of the job and perform duties and tasks consistently, efficiently, and effectively as directed by the Prepared Foods Manager.
  • Understand and adhere to the Co-op’s Policies and Procedures Manual and the departmental policies and procedures, achieving expected results for the department and the Co-op.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Department Operations

  • Respond to customers’ requests and needs, following store and department guidelines for excellent customer service.
  • Perform daily department tasks as assigned.
  • Alert Prepared Foods Manager of equipment repair and replacement needs.
  • Follow safety, sanitation, and security procedures.
  • Ensures proper food safety and storage techniques as established by the Local Health Department.
  • Properly record and dispose of unsellable items and trash.
  • Contribute to accurate monthly and quarterly inventory counts, as requested.
  • Assist the Prepared Foods Manager in achieving goals in sales, sales per labor hour, inventory turns, margin and labor cost.
  • Assist in the development and execution of promotions, marketing, and merchandising with the Prepared Foods Manager.
  • Coordinate daily production and pars based on the needs of the shift, ensuring an efficient workflow.
  • Participate in production as needed by the departments.
  • Responsible for opening and/or closing the Prepared Foods Departments and ensuring opening and closing procedures are followed.
  • Assist in covering for staff breaks and during staff shortages or periods of need.
  • Work at an effective, efficient pace with a focus on the priorities established by the Prepared Food Manager.
  • Assist The Prepared Foods Manager with staff training
  • Ensure Department specific procedures and systems are being followed

Merchandise

  • Ensure the Prepared Foods Departments are clean, fully stocked and correctly rotated.
  • Ensure well-organized back stock to minimize loss and out of stocks on the retail floor.
  • Prepare all menu items according to established recipes, maintaining high standards for food quality including freshness, consistency and presentation.
  • Assist with placing, receiving and processing orders. Check condition of product and invoice accuracy on all deliveries. Document and communicate inaccuracies and items for credit.
  • Follow department policies for handling invoices
  • Ensure the cleanliness of common spaces
  • Receive and process special and wholesale orders
  • Follow department procedures for merchandising retail spaces
  • Check for accuracy of all signage and scale labels, Alert the Prepared Foods Manager of any inaccuracies or needs.

Other

  • Maintain open communication with all Prepared Foods Departments and Management to ensure smooth operations.
  • Attend staff and other meetings as necessary and/or requested.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.
  • Maintain up to date certifications – Food Handlers Permit and snap training

Department Maintenance

  • Keep retail areas for all Prepared Foods departments, storage areas, dining room, and equipment including but not limited to walk in coolers & freezer clean orderly, and efficient condition.
  • Maintain regular and thorough cleanings of retail areas for Prepared Foods, storage areas, and equipment including but not limited to dish areas, ovens, production areas, walk-in cooler & freezer.
  • Ensure proper use of equipment within each department.
  • Notify Prepared Foods Manager of specific needs for equipment repair or replacement.
Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Availability – Must be available to work as scheduled including mornings, evenings and at least one weekend day each week.
  • Education and/or Experience
  1. High School diploma or equivalent.
  2. Previous Grocery Deli or Food Service experience required.
  3. Basic proficiency with computer applications and programs including email, Catapult, and operations related applications.
  4. Previous leadership experience preferred.
  5. High level of interest in natural and organic foods. High level of interest in the cooperative business structure and in the long-term sustainability of locally-owned, independent businesses preferred.
  6. Very strong work ethic and demonstrable attention to detail. Must be a fast, focused, and hardworking person.
  7. Experience working with the public. Experience with diverse cultures and backgrounds preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Fast paced work environment
  • Business office with moderate to loud environment including but not limited to: Computers, printers, paging, telephones, human voices, equipment, and machinery
  • Work near moving mechanical parts (i.e. store equipment, tools, etc.)
  • Work in cold/hot climate areas (i.e. outdoors, walk in cooler, freezer)
  • Ability to work in an environment with moderate to loud noises (i.e. equipment and machinery)
  • Crowded work spaces. Equipment sharing required
  • Work in high precarious places (i.e. ladders, ladder work)
