This Senior Manufacturing Engineer role at Crane Currency in Dalton, MA is built for someone who wants real ownership, from identifying problems to designing, installing, and improving solutions.
How you will make an impact:
As a Senior Manufacturing Engineer, you will take ownership of engineering projects that directly affect how products are designed, built, and improved. You’ll lead work that spans new product development, continuous improvement, and critical infrastructure upgrades, partnering closely with operations, maintenance, vendors, and other engineering disciplines to turn ideas into working solutions.
This role is hands-on and visible. You’ll be trusted to solve complex manufacturing problems, manage projects from concept through execution, and make sound technical decisions that balance performance, safety, cost, and reliability in a high-precision manufacturing environment.
Key responsibilities include:
Plan, design, estimate, budget, schedule, and lead engineering projects ranging from straightforward upgrades to complex manufacturing systems.
Drive new product development and continuous improvement initiatives that improve process capability, quality, safety, and throughput.
Lead root cause analysis and structured problem-solving efforts to address manufacturing issues and equipment performance gaps.
Oversee upgrades and modifications to existing equipment and systems, ensuring solutions are practical, robust, and maintainable.
Provide project management and technical leadership for new equipment and system installations.
Develop and review mechanical designs, layouts, and technical specifications from concept through implementation.
Collaborate across disciplines and with external suppliers to deliver projects safely, on time, and within budget.
Knowledge and expertise that matter most for this role:
Required:
Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
Experience leading engineering projects involving multiple disciplines within a manufacturing or industrial environment.
Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals, including machine design, power transmission, linkages, levers, and basic machining practices.
Ability to develop mechanical designs and layouts from concept or existing designs using AutoCAD.
Experience generating, reviewing, and evaluating technical specifications for industrial manufacturing systems.
Proven ability to communicate clearly and effectively with operators, engineers, leaders, and suppliers at all levels.
Solid working knowledge of standard Windows-based tools including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Preferred:
Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
5–7+ years of engineering design and project management experience in a manufacturing setting.
Experience designing, supporting, or improving complex continuous-process manufacturing systems (pulp and paper experience is a plus).
Strong understanding of or exposure to industrial machine and system design, including gearboxes, power transmission, drive systems, pumps, and vacuum systems.
Demonstrated strength in troubleshooting, fault analysis, and hands-on problem solving in production environments.
Experience with continuous improvement methodologies such as Lean, Six Sigma, or 5S, and managing capital projects in an industrial setting.

The salary range for this role is $112,000 – $130,000 annually. Pay is based on multiple factors including but not limited to work experience, qualifications, credentials, and location.
