About This Position
The Garner Police Department is seeking two Civilian Traffic Investigator/Public Safety Aides to join a growing community and police department to perform non-sworn public safety support work involving the response to and investigation of non-injury traffic-related incidents. Employees in this position will also perform traffic control for crash scenes and disabled vehicles; perform intermediate enforcement and informational work with ordinances regulating parking and the treatment, safety, and keeping of animals within the Town. Work will be performed under regular supervision.
Examples of Duties:
- Assists sworn police officers with a variety of tasks which do not require the authority of a sworn law enforcement officer such as responding to traffic-related calls, issuing parking citations and preparing related reports and/or documentation
- Conducts preliminary investigations of non-violent offenses and prepares appropriate police offense/incident reports.
- Responds to traffic crashes not involving personal injury and completes traffic incident reports. Collects, analyzes and compiles data to establish the cause of traffic accidents
- Examines accident scene for signs of physical evidence.
- Deploys traffic control devices as needed to maintain safe and efficient traffic flow.
- Responds to issues related to code enforcement and parking enforcement; prepares and serves notices or corrects existing violations.
- Responds to disabled vehicles and complaints of parking violations.
- Responds to and investigates animal control calls for service and incidents, including animal cruelty; enforces animal control laws and transports animals as required.
- Provides coverage and support when the animal control unit is not staffed to ensure continuity of services
- Prepares written reports, forms and other documents. Maintains appropriate records and files.
- Provides information and assistance to the public, informing citizens of services in the community, or providing referrals to other city, county or state agencies.
- Contacts various governmental groups to facilitate information flow.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must:
- be at least 18 years old; and
- have a high school diploma (or equivalent); and
- possess a valid driver's license and good driving history; and
- have DCI certification or the ability to obtain certification within 6 months
Preference will be given to applicants who have:
- completed the Civilian Traffic Investigator training through the North Carolina Justice Academy
- previous experience with traffic direction and/or crash scene investigations
- familiarity with eCrash software
- knowledge of animal shelter operations and/or animal control procedures
Selected candidates must successfully complete the Civilian Traffic Investigator training through the North Carolina Justice Academy and a field training program after being hired.
Additional Information:
The salary range shown is the hiring range. The starting salary within this range will be determined based on the selected candidate's skills and qualifications.

These positions will be scheduled to work 40 hours per week, aligning with Patrol squads A/B or C/D, working 4 days in a row (may include weekends), then off 4 days in a row.
The standard work schedule will be 10 hours per day, 12:00 PM - 10:00 PM. These positions may offer a flexible schedule such as 11:00 AM - 9:00 PM or 1:00 PM - 11:00 PM with the supervisor's approval.
