Position Summary

The Lead Recovery Assistant provides direct client support in a residential setting while serving as a frontline supervisor, overseeing Recovery Assistant staff training, documentation compliance, and adherence to program procedures. This role ensures a safe and effective environment through staff leadership and coaching, regular quality checks, and ongoing coordination with the Staff Manager to address team training needs.

Essential Duties

  • Engage with clients in an age and gender appropriate fashion.
  • Provide age and gender appropriate education, including, but not limited to community resources; hygiene; harm reduction; Self-sufficiency and independent living skills; substance abuse and addiction.
  • Manage difficult client behaviors by encouraging adherence to expectations for service.
  • Assess medical emergencies, provide CPR and First Aid, and coordinate medical services as needed.
  • Ensure safe environment for staff and clients.
  • Utilize an agency approved approach to meet this position’s mission.
  • Utilize de-escalation skills to manage client crisis by adhering to the De-escalation Training.
  • Utilize supervisory support.
  • Ensure that all paperwork related to client and program activities is properly completed, managed confidentially and stored in an appropriate location. All progress notes will be in compliance with the Progress Notes Training.
  • Ensure that client files and related paperwork are maintained in accordance with licensing and contract requirements.
  • Submit all paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Ensure an incident report on all emergency or critical incidents is completed by the end of each shift.
  • Adhere to Volunteers of America, Utah personnel handbook and the policies and procedures manual
  • Identify Recovery Assistant training needs and coordinate information with the Staff Manager & Staff Coordinator.
  • Provide documentation training and support to the new/orienting Recovery Assistant staff as requested.
  • Implement and ensure UA’s are being given regularly and correct procedure is being followed.
  • Implement and ensure dorm inspections are done regularly and correct procedure is being followed.
  • Meet with the Staff manager weekly as needed to identify and discuss training needs.
  • Attend work as scheduled and arrive at the designated time.
  • Work must be performed on-site due to the need to provide direct client care.

High school diploma or equivalent preferred and (2 years of social services or homelessness-related experience) or any combination of education, experience, and training which provides the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Computer literate with proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to uphold professional boundaries, confidentiality regulations, agency policies and procedures, and interact in a professional manner with a diverse workforce, clients, and the public.
  • Willingness to accept supervision and direction.
  • Become CPR and First Aid Certified.
  • If driving is a part of the job, must be at least 21 years of age, possess a current driver’s license, have a good driving record, and be insurable on the agency liability policy.
  • Must be able to pass Utah-DHS – Office of Licensing background screening and pre-employment drug screen.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift and carry 25 lbs.
  • Ability to walk up and down stairs.
  • Ability to move around the facility, interacting with clients for extended periods.
  • Work is generally performed in an office environment. May entail using a computer for extended periods of time.
