Job Description:
Do you a passion for public service? Do you want to make a difference in people’s life? Then this is the position for you! Chesapeake Juvenile Services is seeking an experienced individual who will provide valuable assistance to the team.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Plan, develop and implement mental health services suited to the needs of residents in secure detention; assess for high risk mental health indicators; initiate precautionary measures for residents exhibiting high risk indicators; implement step down plans; complete referrals for therapy and psychiatric services
  • Provide crisis intervention; initiate the TDO process for residents who present as a danger to themselves or others and can’t be maintained safely in detention; appear before a Magistrate and/or Judge to assert mental health status of residents
  • Conduct interviews or investigations and resident assessments; formulate and implement plan of action; document progress
  • Provide mental health assessments for mentally and emotionally disturbed residents who have been identified with a history of substance abuse, suicide attempts, child abuse, dual diagnosis, legal/criminal background, and who are acutely or chronically mentally ill and/or mentally impaired
  • Score MAYSI-2 assessments and determine suicide risk level of residents based upon Suicide Risk Assessments and MAYSI-2- assessments completed upon admission; implement necessary suicide risk precautions
  • Enter MAYSI -2 Assessments into SoftTec and Badge Systems
  • Assess residents and refer those in need of medication evaluations to Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist
  • Coordinate, conduct or participate in individual, family. and group counseling
  • Consult and work with staff and other agencies, organizations, or the courts to provide services for residents
  • Keep Administration and Team Leadership apprised of issues related to resident’s mental health issues
  • Keep accurate records and files; prepare correspondence, progress notes, written reports and other documentation as necessary
  • Plan, develop and conduct in-service training annually for all full-time ad part-time staff in the areas of Mandatory Reporting and Child Abuse Prevention Suicide Prevention, Ethics and Professional Relationships Between Staff and Residents and Community Relationships
  • Participate in meetings and committees
  • Develop, revise and implement policies and procedures for area of responsibility; interpret same for staff as needed
  • Monitor program compliance with applicable guidelines, regulations, and laws, monitor referrals and notifications
  • Perform other job-related duties as required (PREA)

Required Qualifications:
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
Requires a master’s degree in psychology, social work, counseling, or a closely related field, or another degree as approved by the Virginia Department of Health Professions.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of two years of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
  • Requires State of Virginia licensure as a Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Professional Counselor (LPC), Clinical Psychologist (LCP).
  • A Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, Psychiatric Clinical Nurse Specialist MD/DO, or a Bachelor’s Prepared Registered Nurse (RN) with five years of experience may be considered in the Emergency Services Program.
  • May require Pre-Screening Certification within 6 weeks of employment (12 weeks for part-time staff) for those in the Emergency Services Program.
  • Depending on the position, it may require a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with the City’s Driving Standards.
