POSITION SUMMARY

The Cook is responsible for the preparation of hot and cold foods, maintaining guidelines established by the company and state regulations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS FOR ALL STAFF
  • Adheres to all policies and procedures.
  • Performs all work in a safe manner.
  • Treats all children, families, staff with respect and courtesy.
  • Is required to complete and maintain all mandated and required training within required agency timeframes.
  • Must maintain timely compliance with all established agency standards and employment documentation.
  • Acts in compliance with Department of Public Welfare Regulations to the highest degree of ethical standards.
  • Maintains a clean and tidy working environment.
  • Provides services in a manner that are sensitive to the age, culture, religion, dietary needs, sexual orientation, gender identity and other important individual needs of clients.
  • Ensures proper physical care is provided.
  • Ensures new clothing and personal grooming items are provided.
  • Implements strategies to discourage runaways and unauthorized absences.
  • Informs the client of his/her rights and ensures that those rights are met.
  • Carries out the program’s rules and discipline standards with a positive, strength-based behavior management approach.
  • Provides transportation to and from campus.
  • Carries out additional duties as assigned by program’s Food Service Supervisor.
POSITION-SPECIFIC ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Prepares hot and cold foods according to ServSafe industry standards and guidelines.
  • Prepares all foods according to established recipes.
  • Packages food items for cottage distribution according to provided counts.
  • Deliver meals and food bins to the cottages.
  • Maintains appropriate inventory levels and assists with unloading deliveries if needed.
  • Assists with putting inventory away and rotating food items.
  • Prepare food ticket requests.
  • Prepare weekend food items.
  • Packs for all special cottage trip requests.
  • Maintains a clean and sanitized kitchen by following a cleaning schedule.
  • Functions as a team with coworkers to ensure all duties are completed during times of special events and time off.
  • Completes a minimum of six (6) hours of annual continuing education/training according to USDA Professional Standards for School Nutrition Professionals.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (Education, experience, etc.)

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent with specialized training and experience in the culinary arts.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of expense in an industrial kitchen setting preferred.
  • Must currently have ServSafe certification (or the ability to obtain certification within 90 days of employment) and maintain throughout employment.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Have basic computer skills.
  • Have basic culinary skills. (knife skills, knowledge of equipment and how to use it, size of pans etc.)
  • Needs valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License with clean 3-year driving history.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
  • Must have health assessment certified by a physician no more than 30 days prior to commencing employment and renewed every two years.
  • Must provide current PA Child Abuse, PA Criminal History and FBI Fingerprinting clearances within 30 days of commencing employment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Working conditions involve being capable and knowledgeable to safely perform duties using industrial food service and kitchen equipment.
  • Must be able to work in extreme temperatures and be able to spend time in walk-in refrigerator and walk-in freezers.
  • Must have ability to stand, bend, for long periods of time, lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.
SAFETY HAZARDS OF THE JOB
  • Hazards associated in the large-scale production and preparing of food are present in this position.
  • Potential for emotional stress as it relates to working with troubled youth, although, food service staff generally engages in only peripheral interaction with client group.
