About This Position

Laboratory Research Technician I

Med-Medicine - Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh - (26002369)

This position will provide technical support to an NIH funded laboratory in the Department of Medicine’s Renal-Electrolyte Division. This lab employs molecular biology, cellular biology, and physiology, to study cell stress and kidney electrolyte regulation.


Job Summary

Performs laboratory testing and some analysis on multiple types of specimen samples. Operates and properly sterilizes equipment and maintains inventory and assists with ordering.


Essential Functions

The candidate will work closely with the supervisor to assist in performing experiments, analyzing data, and maintaining the lab’s inventory, mouse colonies, cell lines, and safety records. S/he must be open to the possibility of working with animals (rodents). A bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or other basic science is required, and prior wet lab research experience is preferred. The successful candidate will be a highly organized individual with good communication skills, who has the motivation and personality to work productively with others in a collegial atmosphere.

Key Job Duties
• Mouse genotyping, handling, breeding, and colony management including euthanasia/sacrifice
• Molecular cloning, western blotting, cell culture, gene editing (CRISPR/Cas9; with guidance from the PI), fixed and live cell confocal microscopy, and work with genetically modified mice (tissue, blood and urine collection/analysis)
•Operates and maintains applicable laboratory equipment for job functions.
•Keeps detailed, accurate, and timely data and log books. Organizes and documents results.
•Sterilizes, maintains, and cleans lab equipment; prepares work areas; and maintains cleanliness
•Provide technical support for other research scientists in the lab (faculty, postdocs, graduate students)


Physical Effort

Requires some bending, stooping, and stretching. Walking around laboratory benches and various common laboratory rooms within the Division. The candidate will use stairs often, and may have to make multiple trips between common equipment rooms between floors. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate laboratory methods and results. Requires lifting up to 20lbs.
