About This Position
POSITION: Group Leader
DEPARTMENT: Youth Services
LOCATION: COMPASS at PS 157
REPORTS TO: Program Director and/or Assistant Program Director
SALARY: $20/hour (based on experience and credentials)
DATES: September 15, 2025 – June 30, 2026
SCHEDULE: Monday–Friday, 2:00 PM–6:00 PM. This position is performance-based and contingent upon funding availability.
JOB SUMMARY
As part of the Youth Services Department, Group Leaders support Grand Street Settlement’s mission to promote growth, leadership, and positive self-image among youth. This role is responsible for creating and maintaining a safe, engaging, and structured afterschool environment.
Group leaders plan and facilitate various activities, including academic enrichment, recreational programming, team-building exercises, and theme-based lessons. They play a key role in fostering a positive group dynamic and ensuring meaningful youth engagement.
QUALIFICATIONS- High school diploma required; college degree preferred
- Minimum of 3 years of experience working with youth (volunteer experience acceptable)
- Experience designing and facilitating curriculum or structured activities
- Demonstrated experience working with diverse youth populations
- Strong organizational and administrative skills
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and work effectively under pressure
- Energetic, personable, and enthusiastic with strong leadership skills
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to motivate and engage youth
Required Clearances & Certifications:
- NYSDOH Fingerprinting
- New York State Clearance Review Background Check
- Three (3) professional references (at least one from a former supervisor)
- Physical exam with updated TB test (fees may apply)
- $25 fee for NY State Clearance Review (if offered position)
- CPR/AED and First Aid certifications preferred
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Training
- Complete all required afterschool training in accordance with school-age child care regulations
Youth Supervision
- Supervise and engage groups of youth in a safe and structured environment
- Address behavioral issues through appropriate intervention and problem-solving
- Maintain proper staff-to-student ratios during all activities and trips
Program Facilitation
- Design and implement project-based, age-appropriate curriculum
- Facilitate daily activities aligned with program themes
- Follow all schedules, procedures, and program expectations
- Collaborate effectively with team members to ensure program success
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and cohesive group environment
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants at all times
- Maintain and monitor first aid supplies and safety equipment
- Keep accurate medical and emergency contact information for all participants
- Document and report all incidents and injuries
- Complete attendance and required program reports
- Adhere to all safety plans, regulations, and organizational policies
Communication & Administrative Duties
- Communicate regularly and professionally with parents/guardians
- Complete all required documentation in a timely and accurate manner
- Model professionalism, including reliability, punctuality, and preparedness
- Assist with supervision and mentorship of junior staff, as needed
- Perform additional duties as assigned
