PEER RECOVERY SUPPORT SPECIALIST (PRSS)

Peer Recovery Support Specialist – PPPACI (Perinatal Postpartum Partnership Access Community Integration)
Full-Time | Mercer County

Job Summary

Peer Recovery Support Specialists (PRSS) provide peer-based support services to individuals recovering from substance use disorders. Services are rooted in person-centered care plans and extend beyond the clinical setting into home and community environments. PRSS staff utilize their own lived experience in recovery to guide, mentor, advocate for, and empower individuals to engage in and sustain meaningful recovery journeys. This position emphasizes recovery-oriented support, community connection, and consumer empowerment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide peer recovery support services to an assigned caseload of PPPACI consumers

  • Use lived recovery experience to mentor individuals and help them identify and set realistic goals for their recovery journey

  • Advocate for consumers and support them in navigating recovery-related systems and services

  • Network and connect consumers with appropriate community resources to promote productive, substance-free lifestyles

  • Conduct outreach activities to engage and re-engage consumers in recovery services

  • Assist consumers with completing applications and required paperwork as needed

  • Accompany consumers to medical, behavioral health, or recovery-related appointments when requested

  • Provide transportation to consumers as needed, in accordance with agency policies

  • Complete required documentation accurately and in a timely manner

  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support recovery services and program needs

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • Lived experience of recovery from substance use disorders

  • Minimum of two (2) years of sustained sobriety required

  • State or nationally recognized Peer Recovery Support Specialist certification or training, as required by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Services (DoHS)

  • Preferred: At least one (1) year of experience working with individuals experiencing substance use challenges

Work Environment & Expectations

This position involves community-based work, including outreach, transportation, and in-person engagement with consumers. Flexibility, professionalism, strong communication skills, and adherence to ethical peer support standards are essential.
