The Materials and Manufacturing Directorate at the Air Force Research Laboratories (AFRL) at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB) in Dayton, OH is looking for a qualified entry-level research scientist to join a research effort relating to the photophysical characterization of novel chromophores and materials.

Responsibilities:

  • Detailed optical characterization of new materials to discover and understand their unique properties.
  • The candidate will work with an interdisciplinary team of researchers to investigate fundamental structure-property relationships.
  • Solve important, long-term challenges in an environment that strongly encourages collaboration, publication in top journals, and conference attendance.

Requirements

  • Must be able to work in an office environment at a desk and computer.
  • Must be able to work in a lab environment.
  • Must be able to lift or carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Must be a US Citizen
  • May travel up to 10% to conferences, program reviews, industry meetings, or other collaborative events.
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Materials Science, or a closely related science or engineering field.

Desired Skills

  • Familiarity with the optical characterization of materials, including techniques like spectrophotometry and steady-state and time-resolved luminescence.
  • Experience with or knowledge of the following characterization techniques:

o Ground-state UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy.

o Steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy.

o Luminescence lifetime measurements (e.g., Time-Correlated Single-Photon Counting - TCSPC).

o Luminescence quantum yield measurements.

  • Proficiency in advanced data analysis and visualization.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to research, devise, and learn new techniques and technical topics.
  • Ability to work independently and in a group setting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace (Google Mail, Calendar, Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc.)
