Job Description: Are you passionate about astronomy, nature, and environmental education? Do you enjoy working with the public and want to be part of inspiring programs for all ages? If so, this seasonal part-time Recreation Leader position may be a perfect fit!
Position Overview:

This role primarily supports the Chesapeake Planetarium and other city facilities by assisting in the delivery of engaging educational and recreational programs related to astronomy, space science, outdoor programs and the natural environment. The Recreation Leader also helps with a variety of environmental and recreational outdoor events at parks, community centers, and citywide special events.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with planning, setting up, and facilitating programs and demonstrations at the Planetarium and other city sites.
  • Provide excellent customer service to participants of all ages, ensuring a welcoming and educational experience.
  • Support hands-on educational activities related to science, outdoor education, nature, and astronomy.
  • Ensure participant safety; oversee equipment setup, takedown, and facility cleanup.
  • Respond to accidents/injuries and administers basic first aid if needed.
  • Help with program registrations and payment collection.
  • Maintain inventory and organize program equipment.
  • Enforce safety rules, inspect facilities for hazards, and report issues promptly.
  • Assist with seasonal programs and special events such as science walks, nature hikes, and family astronomy nights.

Qualifications:

  • Enthusiasm for science, outdoor programs, nature, and public education.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work with diverse age groups in both indoor and outdoor settings.
  • Basic first aid knowledge preferred.
  • Ability to perform physical activities related to program setup and public engagement.

Required Qualifications: VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
Requires instruction that is sufficient for satisfactory job performance.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this position requires a minimum of one month of full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Requires CPR and First Aid certification within the first year of employment. May require a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with the City Driving Standards. .

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications: Employee must have ability to: independently lift chairs and tables; effectively communicate with public and staff; complete written forms and reports; lift 40 pounds. Experience in park, recreational or educational programming, especially with diverse age groups.

Basic knowledge of astronomy, science and outdoor recreational programming.

Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage the public and work in a team environment.

Basic computer skills.
