Medical Director
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

JOB SUMMARY
The Medical Director directs the medical aspects of the hospice patient care program. The Medical Director serves as a consultant and advisor to the Director, offering expertise in assessing and interpreting medical issues. The hospice physician consults with the primary physician of hospice patients but does not assume full medical direction of the patient’s care. The Medical Director also serves as a consultant to the Interdisciplinary Group (IDG).

QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Degree
Graduate of an accredited school of medicine; Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.).
Training/Licensure
Practicing physician currently licensed under the provisions of the State Board of Medicine.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Approved for admitting privileges and treatment of patients in the hospital(s) within their practice area.
- Strong understanding of hospice philosophy and principles of care.
- Willingness to function as an active member of the hospice team.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Oversees the implementation of physician, nursing, social work, therapy, and counseling services within hospice to ensure consistent, high‑quality care for patients and families.
- In conjunction with the patient’s attending physician, the Medical Director, physician employees, and contracted physicians are responsible for palliation and management of the terminal illness and related conditions.
- Assumes overall responsibility for the medical component of the hospice patient care program, functions as a member of the IDG, and serves as a consultant for medical care.
- Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Overseeing implementation of all clinical disciplines to ensure patient and family needs are met.
- Maintaining responsibility for the medical component of the hospice patient care program.
- Participating in and serving as a medical resource to the IDG and hospice leadership.
- Reviewing clinical information for each hospice patient and providing written certification that the patient’s life expectancy is six months or less if the illness runs its normal course. Determinations must consider:
Primary terminal condition
Related diagnoses
Current subjective and objective findings
Current medications and treatment orders
Management of conditions unrelated to the terminal illness
- Reviewing each patient’s clinical information prior to every recertification period.
- Participating in the establishment and implementation of the plan of care, coordinated with the attending physician and IDG.
- Reviewing, updating, and signing the plan of care when changes occur and at least every 15 days.
- Consulting with attending physicians upon request.
- Being available 24/7 to manage terminal illness and medical needs when the attending physician is unavailable.
- Acting as a liaison with community physicians and facilitating communication.
- Participating in staff education programs as requested.
- Participating as a member of designated interdisciplinary groups.

Remain a concern after consultation with the primary physician
- Providing medical consultation and direction when the attending physician or designee cannot be reached and the patient’s condition requires medical attention.
