POSITION OVERVIEWAs a Business Analyst at FamilyTreeDNA, you will serve as the vital link between our complex genetic testing products and the technical execution of our IT and development teams. Reporting to the Product Manager, you will transform high-level business goals into actionable technical requirements. Your primary focus will be providing the data-driven frameworks and rigorous documentation necessary to prioritize features that empower our users to explore their ancestry and deep maternal and paternal origins.
ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESRequirements Gathering: Translate stakeholder needs into detailed technical specifications, ensuring that user stories for Y-DNA, mtDNA, and autosomal testing features are "Definition of Ready" for development.Strategic Backlog Grooming: Partner with the Product Manager to maintain and prioritize the product backlog, applying frameworks (like RICE or MoSCoW) to ensure the team is always working on the highest-value genealogy tools.Process Optimization: Document and analyze current workflows to identify bottlenecks, providing data-driven recommendations to streamline the user experience.Agile Coordination: Manage the internal timeline for requirements gathering to ensure that designers and developers have the necessary documentation ahead of sprint planning.Solution Design & Testing: Orchestrate user acceptance testing (UAT) and develop comprehensive test cases to ensure new ancestry features function accurately across diverse customer datasets.Cross-Functional Alignment: Act as the primary liaison between Product, Marketing, and IT to coordinate product release strategies and ensure timely delivery of new tools to our global customer base.Documentation & Insight: Maintain a centralized repository of business logic and system requirements, providing stakeholders with clear insights into project progress and technical feasibility.
POSITION REQUIREMENTSEducation: Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field.Industry Experience: Previous experience in genealogy or consumer genetic testing is a significant advantage. Familiarity with FamilyTreeDNA’s unique product suite is highly valued.Critical Thinking: A natural analytical mindset with the ability to navigate ambiguity, resolve complex system dependencies, conflicting business requirements to find scalable solutions.Stakeholder Management: Experience working closely with the Product Manager, developers, and business leaders to communicate updates, negotiate trade-offs, and find acceptable technical solutions.Prioritization & Time Management: Demonstrated skill in using objective frameworks to rank tasks and managing your own work cadence to prevent project bottlenecks.SKILLSData-Driven Prioritization: Proficiency in evaluating competing requests based on business value, technical effort, and user impact to support the Product Manager’s roadmap strategy and decisions.Efficient Time Management: Proven ability to manage multiple workstreams simultaneously, meeting tight deadlines in an Agile environment without sacrificing detail or quality.Analytical Proficiency: Strong ability to evaluate complex business processes and genetic genealogy tools to identify opportunities for improvement.Technical Ecosystem Knowledge: Familiarity with software development methodologies (Agile/Scrum) and tools such as Jira, Miro, and Excel.Interpersonal & Communication: Exceptional ability to translate complex "genetics-speak" into clear technical requirements for developers and simplified updates for non-technical stakeholders and users.PREFFERED QUAILIFICATIONSSoftware Literacy: Technical literacy with the ability to quickly navigate and utilize team collaboration tools, including Jira for task tracking and Miro for process mapping. Working knowledge of additional tools such as Power BI and Zoho are a plus.Professional Certification: Previous experience or certification as a Business Analyst, Product Manager, or similar role.Product Familiarity: 2+ years of experience using FamilyTreeDNA’s products, features, and tools; specific experience managing or participating in FamilyTreeDNA’s Group Projects is a significant plus.
