OVERVIEW
ECS seeks an innovative Middle School Food & Sustainability Teacher who embodies our school's core values of sustainability and brings them to life through dynamic, project-based learning. This teacher will guide students in exploring the authentic connections between sustainability and food through the lens of agriculture—growing food in a vibrant school garden, preparing and sharing meals, and examining how food systems impact our environment and community. Through hands-on, inquiry-driven projects, students will design, create, and market food-based or garden-inspired products, developing entrepreneurial skills by bringing ideas to life and potentially selling them for profit. The role emphasizes frequent outdoor learning experiences, environmental education, and critical thinking about the systems that shape how food is grown, distributed, and consumed—empowering students to identify opportunities for improvement through community building and sustainable practices. The teacher will also cultivate collaborative partnerships with local farmers, chefs, entrepreneurs, and environmental leaders, ensuring students engage in authentic, real-world experiences and connect directly with professionals whose work reflects the learning happening in the classroom.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Implement lesson plans by employing a variety of teaching strategies that provide meaningful learning opportunities and promote student engagement
- Plan, design, and implement a food and culture curriculum for students in grades 6-8
- Connect and develop relationships and partnerships with regional organizations supporting urban agriculture, green/local food production, and others in the sustainable foods industry locally
- Collaborate with colleagues and the schoolʼs instructional leaders to regularly evaluate and improve lessons and materials
- Design and implement a school garden plan
- Employ multiple methods of instruction to accommodate different learning styles and abilities, including special education students, gifted education students, and English language learners; demonstrate creativity in implementing these methods in a non-traditional setting
- Structure compelling, standard, or competency-aligned lessons that challenge students' critical thinking and collaboration skills; lessons are aligned with course outcomes
- Support alignment to district-wide education for sustainability, systems thinking, and global citizenship values
Educational Background and Work Experience
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
- PA teaching certification and/or a combination of education and experience in culinary arts, food studies instruction, or environmental education.
- 3 or more years of experience preferred
- Familiarity with charter schools helpful
Compensation and Benefits
- Minimum starting salary of $44,716 up to a maximum starting salary of $51,056, dependent upon prior years' relevant experience.

Commonwealth of PA Sexual Misconduct/Abuse Disclosure Release (Act 168) and Mandated Reporter Training will also be required.
