Job Description

About the Role:

The Hospice Registered Nurse working the 3x12-hour night shifts from 7:30pm to 7:30am Monday through Friday plays a critical role in delivering compassionate, patient-centered end-of-life care. This position focuses on managing and alleviating symptoms, providing emotional support to patients and their families, and ensuring comfort during the final stages of life. The nurse will coordinate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement individualized care plans that respect the wishes and dignity of each patient. Additionally, the role requires vigilant monitoring of patient conditions, timely documentation, and effective communication with healthcare providers to adapt care as needed. Ultimately, this position aims to enhance the quality of life for hospice patients while supporting their families through a challenging time with empathy and professionalism.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the United States.
  • Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience, preferably in hospice, palliative, or end-of-life care settings.
  • Ability to work overnight shifts consistently from 7:30pm to 7:30am, Monday through Friday.
  • Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care to hospice patients during night shifts, including symptom management, medication administration, and monitoring vital signs.
  • Assess patient needs regularly and update care plans in collaboration with the interdisciplinary hospice team.
  • Offer emotional support and education to patients and their families regarding disease progression, comfort measures, and available resources.
  • Document all nursing interventions, patient responses, and changes in condition accurately and promptly in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Respond to patient and family concerns or emergencies during the night, coordinating with on-call physicians and other healthcare professionals as necessary.

Skills:

The required clinical skills enable the nurse to perform thorough patient assessments, manage complex symptoms, and administer medications safely during overnight hours. Strong communication skills are essential for effectively coordinating with interdisciplinary teams and providing clear, compassionate guidance to patients and families. Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities are used daily to respond promptly to changes in patient conditions and emergencies. Familiarity with electronic medical records facilitates accurate documentation and information sharing across care providers. Preferred skills such as hospice certification and advanced life support training enhance the nurse’s ability to deliver specialized care and improve patient outcomes in this sensitive and demanding role.
