In this role, you will contribute to the core search experience of a leading e-commerce and multichannel platform, shaping how millions of customers discover and interact with products. You will work in a highly skilled, remote-first engineering team responsible for designing and evolving a modern, cloud-native search engine built on AWS. The role combines deep technical ownership with strong product impact, as you help define scalable and intelligent search experiences using Solr-based technologies and hybrid search approaches. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to translate business needs into high-performance search solutions. This position is ideal for engineers who enjoy working end-to-end—from architecture to deployment and operations—while continuously improving system performance and relevance.

In this role, you will design, build, and evolve advanced search functionalities that directly influence customer product discovery and business outcomes. You will take end-to-end ownership of search services and ensure technical excellence across development, deployment, and operations.

• Design and develop scalable, high-performance search solutions using Apache Solr and related technologies
• Build and optimize hybrid and vector-based search systems, including semantic search and query understanding enhancements
• Own the full software lifecycle, from architecture design and implementation to CI/CD, deployment, and production maintenance
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business and customer needs into technical solutions for the search domain
• Define and maintain coding standards, testing strategies, and performance benchmarks for search services
• Contribute to architectural decisions and evaluate trade-offs between technical scalability and business impact
• Mentor team members and actively share expertise in search technologies within the engineering team

You bring strong experience in building and scaling search and data-intensive systems in modern cloud environments. You are comfortable working in complex distributed architectures and enjoy taking ownership of both services and infrastructure.

• Extensive experience with Apache Solr, Querqy, or comparable search technologies such as Elasticsearch or OpenSearch
• Hands-on experience designing and implementing vector search and hybrid search systems
• Strong programming skills in Java, Kotlin, or other JVM-based languages (or willingness to work in a JVM ecosystem)
• Experience with backend frameworks such as Spring Boot or similar web application frameworks
• Familiarity with AWS, Docker, and modern cloud-native infrastructure
• Experience with NoSQL databases such as MongoDB or similar technologies
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a product-oriented mindset
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively in remote, agile teams
• Fluent German (minimum B2 level) and strong English proficiency
