Under the direction of and reporting to the Manger of Referral Testing, prepares samples for testing by pHing, weighing/measuring, incubation, processing samples by volumes and temperature, aliquoting, labeling and documentation of all pieces of required patient history and sample processing. Investigates testing requests for clinicians, lab staff, and clients: a.) explores alternate testing options, b.) communicates test-related problems issues, c.) investigates and responds to request for information for patient safety and customer relations cases, d.) provides recommendations for the appropriate resolution of sample problems and missing required information. Communicates testing requirements, issues of stability and/or problem samples to laboratory customers, including: a.) lab testing-related problems/issues reported by personnel from reference labs, b.) lab testing-related problems/issues identified through various daily reports produced by the lab information system, and any issues needing a genetic counselor to investigate. This position requires certification for shipping as mandated by the Federal Department of Transportation
I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Prepares samples for shipping to reference laboratories by measuring and adjusting urine sample pH, weighing and aliquoting stool, processing samples by adding specialized stabilizers, centrifugation, incubation and pipetting specific volumes into shipping tubes.
2. Coordinates and handles the manifesting, packing with appropriate temperature control, and shipping of laboratory samples according to DOT regulations.
3. Handles complex issues/problems identified or reported by reference laboratories by documenting the occurrence of and suggested resolution of problems in the laboratories’ problem tracking system, to facilitate a timely resolution of all problems/issues.
4. Creates case documentation for laboratory information system new test builds, and edits.
5. Performs quality assurance, records temperatures, and performs monthly maintenance as required.

License/Certification/Education:
Preferred:
1. Associates degree is strongly preferred.
Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. Minimum of 3 years related experience in laboratory environment, with demonstrated related technical experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. Strong working knowledge of lab operations and knowledge of medical terminology required.
3. Demonstrated highly effective problem-solving abilities with strong attention to detail.
4. Strong interpersonal skills with emphasis on diplomacy, professionalism, and good listening techniques.
5. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively under pressure.
This position requires special certification for “Shipment of Biohazardous Materials”, as mandated by the Federal Department of Transportation.
Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
