About This Position

Summary:

The ED Staff Nurse renders nursing care and related assistance to Emergency Department patients, with patient-centered care being their primary responsibility. They are responsible for assessment of the patient, in conjunction with the physician, and provide medical and nursing care for each and every patient. They will utilize the nursing process in assessment planning, intervention, evaluation, and teaching while providing patient care. The ED staff nurse will know and support the philosophy and objectives of the Emergency Department. They work under the direction of the Patient Care Coordinator and are ultimately accountable and responsible to the Director. They will utilize the knowledge and skills appropriate to communicate and interact with the patients, families, and visitors of all age groups while being sensitive to their cultural and religious beliefs.

Performance Expectations:

  • Utilizes critical thinking abilities and executes the ability to care for the Trauma, Stroke and STEMI patient according to protocol, policy, and procedures.
  • Utilizes the ability to care for the cardiac patient and identify lethal cardiac dysrhythmias.
  • Utilizes the ability to perform cardioversion, defibrillation and transcutaneous pacing.
  • Utilizes the ability to assist with set up and maintenance for sterile field during procedures.
  • Utilizes the ability to assist with cardioversion for atrial tachycardia, atrial flutter and atrial fibrillation.
  • Utilizes appropriate technique for insertion and removal of a peripheral IV and initiates IV therapy in accordance with standards, policies and procedures.
  • Utilizes the ability to perform moderate sedation.
  • Utilizes the ability to perform as a Triage nurse.
  • Utilizes the ability to collect evidence, following all state, federal and/or hospital regulations.
  • Keeps a clean, safe, quiet, and efficient work environment.
  • Follows the direction of the PCC.
  • Meets established standards of practice of assessment and reassessment from triage to discharge/admission/transfer as evidenced by appropriate documentation according to policy and procedures, protocols, patient satisfaction.
  • Competent in patient interventions as evidenced by safe administration of medications, treatments, procedures, infection control, and addressing changes in status to safely care for patients.
  • Utilizes the knowledge and skills to safely and appropriately fulfill job specific responsibilities related to clinically ill patients using evidence based practice.
  • Utilizes the ability to perform and complete provider orders in a timely manner.

Qualifications:

Education/Skills

Graduate of a recognized non-online RN program required. Telmetry nurse education and EKG training within 90 days of hire. NIHSS required within 90 days of hire. External Juglar training and competency must be completed within 1 year of hire. Moderate sedation training within orientation period.

Work Experience:

Emergency or medical-surgical experience preferred, not required.

Certification/Licensure-DUE UPON HIRE

  • Licensed RN able to practice within the State of MS

Mental Demands:

Must be able to perform tasks quickly, cooperate with others, take orders, and follow directions precisely. Must execute initiative and understand emotional stress of patients, families, and other staff during emergency or crisis situations. Must understand and utilize appropriate coping mechanisms in dealing with death and dying.
