About This Position

Description:

Job Summary: Provides direct patient care in the medical-surgical setting. Communicates with Providers, Nurse Manager, and co-workers, regarding changes in patient care and patient’s clinical condition including results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology. Able to respond quicky and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Maintains regulatory agency requirements, nursing and hospital policies, procedures and standards. Able to perform general nursing duties in all departments with adequate supervision.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assessment and Monitoring: Performing physical exams, recording medical histories, and monitoring vitals to track changes in patient conditions.
  • Treatment and Medication: Administering medications (oral, IV, injection, topical), changing dressing, and assisting with diagnostic tests.
  • Direct Patient Care: Assisting with daily living activities (feeding, bathing, dressing) and wound care.
  • Procedures and Treatments: Assisting with laboratory test, inserting catheters, and providing treatments like nebulizers.
  • Safety and Compliance: Adhering to infection control procedures and ensuring a safe environment for patients
  • Care Planning: Creating, implementing, and updating patient care plans in collaboration with providers and specialists.
  • Patient Education: Educating patients and their families on disease management, treatment plans, and post-discharge care.
  • Collaboration: Working with a multidisciplinary team to ensure patient needs are met and advocating for patient comfort.
  • Answering phone and call lights, in a polite manner and communicating information to the appropriate personnel or family.
  • Supervision: Supervising licensed practical nurses and certified nursing assistants.

Requirements:

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Patient Assessment and Monitoring: Accurately taking vital signs, evaluating health status, and recognizing subtle changes in patient condition.
  • Medication Administration: Safe handling, dosage calculation, and administration of medication via oral, IV, or injection methods.
  • Wound Care and Management: Performing dressing changes, cleaning wounds, and assessing healing progress.
  • Patient Care: Assisting with daily living activities (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, toileting, and ambulation.
  • Technical Procedures: Collecting lab samples, performing catheterizations, and administering nebulizer treatments.
  • Technical Proficiency: Using Electronic Medical Records systems for documentation and operating medical equipment like ventilators, IV pumps, and monitors.
  • Emergency Responses: Proficiency in CPR, Basic Life Support (BLS), or Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).
  • Care Plan Development: collaborating with providers to create and implement comprehensive care plans.
  • Critical Thinking and Decision Making: Using analytical skills to evaluate patient data and make fast, accurate decisions under pressure.
  • Communication: Communicating effectively with patients, families, and multidisciplinary team members, including shift reports.
  • Compassion and Empathy: Providing patient-centered care with emotional stability, kindness, and respect.
  • Time Management and Organizational Skills: Prioritizing tasks while caring for multiple patients simultaneously.

Education/Licensure Requirements:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Current Registered Nursing license for the state of Mississippi
  • Current BLS Healthcare certification
  • ACLS certification desired

Experience Requirements:

  • Must hold a current Registered Nursing license for the state of Mississippi
  • Must maintain license/certification, registration in good standing.
  • Basic computer Knowledge.

Physical Requirements:

  • Standing and Walking: Nurses must walk and stand for long periods, often for the duration of a 12-hour shift.
  • Patient Handling and Lifting: Ability to lift, transfer, position, and reposition patients, often involving managing weights in excess.
  • Body Mechanics: Frequent bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching, and twisting are required to provide patient care and operating equipment.
  • Physical Strength: Ability to push, pull, or carry objects, such as wheelchairs, carts, or equipment.
  • Fine Motor Skills: High dexterity and hand-eye coordination for delicate tasks like handling instruments, administering injections, and operating computers.
  • Sensory Requirements: Good vision for monitoring patient conditions, and hearing/speech for effective communication.
  • Environment: Exposure to hazardous materials, infectious diseases, blood, body fluids, and unpleasant odors.
  • Equipment: Frequently utilizing personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Workload: Ability to manage high-stress environments and fast-paced environments.
