About This Position
The EMT-Emergency room tech. is responsible for the health and well being of patients assigned to their care. They are responsible for critical thinking and decision making skills as it relates to the care of patients and the smooth flow of the nursing department and field. The EMT-Emergency Room Tech provides medical and emergency nursing care to patients by performing the following tasks in accordance with the Kimball Health Services policies and procedures. The EMT-Emergency Room Tech is supervised by the EMS Director, and Chief Nursing Officer related to their scope of responsibility and specifically supervised by the EMS Director.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Begins the shift by attending and receiving report from the off going crew who have worked the proceeding shift. Asks questions for clarification of the staff that have been caring for the patient/s.
- The EMT-Emergency Room Tech will ensure the readiness of assigned ambulances at the beginning of every shift to include truck checks and equipment maintenance if needed.
- Assist the Nursing Staff in all aspects of patient care during their shift shall be a priority.
- The EMT-Emergency Room Tech will make themselves available to the Charge RN between the hours of 0800-2000, when not performing off-site EMS duties. If multiple calls occur overnight, or other circumstances arise, then the EMT and Charge RN will adjust as needed to ensure the EMT gets adequate down time during their shift.
- Respond to EMS scene calls and inter-facility transfers in appropriate EMS uniform. (EMS Pants and EMS Identifying shirt, boots or protective footwear)
- Appropriately represent Kimball Health Services with professional appearance either in the field or in hospital.
- Assists with admission and discharge plan for patient as needed.
- Assists with ancillary nursing services on all ER patients and floor patients as needed.
- Explains procedures and treatment to patient to allay apprehension, verify understanding and gain cooperation.
- Serves as a patient advocate by clarifying and confirming communications from hospital/EMS personnel.
- Assists in monitoring the patient when helping in the ER and floor for any changes in condition. Maintains awareness of comfort and safety needs of patient. Reports any changes in patients condition during the shift to the Medical Provider, Patient Care Coordinator and Director of Nursing.
- Assists in all areas of patient care as needed.
- Follows all Universal Precautions and Blood-borne Pathogen protocols as outlined by hospital policy.
- Initiates Isolation precautions as appropriate for safety of patient, staff and visitors.
- Treats patients, visitors and fellow employees with dignity and respect at all times.
- Abides by the strict confidentiality policy of the hospital.
- Provides for the emotional/physical comfort and safety of patients and visitors
- Responds to life saving situations based upon nursing standards, policies, procedures, and protocol
- Must be certified in BLS.
- Participates in department quality improvement activities.
- Works variable shifts, weekends, holidays. Demonstrates flexibility by adjusting to variable workload and job duties.
- Shares knowledge with other staff and students as appropriate. Assists with the orientation and education of staff and students.
- Demonstrates ability to use critical thinking skills by assessing situation and knowing how decision making will impact patient, family, staff and others involved in patient care. This includes assessing how decision will impact on coming shift.
- Reports any unsafe situation.
- Assists other departments, providers, nursing staff, visitors etc as needed.
- Completes all annual and any special education programs as assigned by the EMS Director, Director of Nursing or Kimball Health Services.
- Reflects positive image of profession, Kimball Health Services in words and actions. Demonstrates a commitments and adherence to all Corporate Compliance issues, Federal and State Regulations.
- May perform all tasks and duties within their scope of practice.
- Any other duties assigned.
Education and/or Experience
Graduate of accredited EMT Program.
Completion of Basic Life Support, and any other classes or programs as deemed appropriate.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Certified EMT in the state of Nebraska without restriction. National Registry EMT Certification preferred. Certified and current in BLS required and PHTLS is preferred.
