Lecturer of AnthropologyThe Department of Anthropology at Barnard College, Columbia University, invites applications for a full-time Lecturer position in Anthropological Archaeology. The successful candidate’s teaching and scholarship should combine a methodological focus on the archaeological sciences with a strong intellectual engagement in current debates in social theory. We welcome applications from candidates with diverse backgrounds who demonstrate a strong pedagogical foundation, a record of teaching excellence in both laboratory and seminar settings, and broad training in anthropology.

The position is open to scholars working in any geographic region. However, we particularly encourage applications from candidates whose regional focus does not substantially overlap with existing departmental strengths in North America, Africa, and West Asia. We are especially interested in applicants whose teaching and scholarship foreground the archaeology of gender, race, foodways, craft production, and/or related themes that complement current departmental commitments.

The Barnard Department of Anthropology works in close partnership with the Columbia Department of Anthropology; together, the two departments form a large and active community of scholars in sociocultural, archaeological, and linguistic anthropology.

The Department of Anthropology at Barnard College, Columbia University, invites applications for a full-time Lecturer position in Anthropological Archaeology. The successful candidate’s teaching and scholarship should combine a methodological focus on the archaeological sciences with a strong intellectual engagement in current debates in social theory. The teaching load is three courses per semester and includes participation in the Department of Anthropology’s archaeology curriculum, as well as the College’s First-Year Seminars program. Lecturers are reviewed in their third year of full-time service, with the possibility of reappointment and consideration for promotion to Senior Lecturer in the seventh year. Subsequent reviews typically occur on a seven-year cycle.

Skills, Qualifications & Requirements:

Required Qualifications

Applicants must have a doctoral degree in hand by July 1, 2026, a proven capacity for teaching excellence in a liberal arts setting, and an ability and desire to perform service within the department and the college.

  • Statement describing the applicant’s teaching philosophy, experiences, and interests

  • Two sample syllabi

Only semi-finalists will be asked to identify at least three references. Referees will receive an email notification instructing them to upload confidential letters directly to Workday.
