About This Position

Gift Shop Clerk I

Position Summary: Works under the supervision of the Director of Holzer Heritage Foundation,
Volunteer Services, and Gift Shop. Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Gift Shop, including greeting, handling and assist customers, performing general duties as outlined in the job description, receive and stock merchandise, improve merchandise displays, and perform clerical duties associated Gift Shop operations.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Receives and checks merchandise upon delivery, cross references orders, packing list and invoices to verify pricing, substitutions, quantities, shortages, damages and amounts open on order. Reports discrepancies in shortage/damages to manufacturer on day of receipt of merchandise and documents communication.

  • Makes productive use of time by improving and maintaining displays and stock arrangements in both the Gift Shop and Storeroom daily so to provide an organized, clean and safe work environment.

  • Set up, arrange and improve displays and/or arrange merchandise on shelves, counters, and windows to promote sales.

  • Assists with reordering merchandise for the Gift Shop and with maintaining the inventory selection for the Gift Shop.

  • Greets and handles customers in a timely, courteous and friendly manner, acknowledging customers and assisting immediately upon entering the Gift Shop, and responds to phone inquiries.

  • Engages with customers on the sales floor and the counter by offering suggestions, demonstrating products and exhibiting both knowledge and enthusiasm for merchandise available.

  • Balances cash and prepares daily cash reports at the end of each day in a neat, organized format, insuring accuracy of all data. Prepares weekly and monthly sales reports; ensuring accuracy of all information.

  • Processes accounts payable/receivables, and other mail on the day received. Records invoices for payment in record book, sends original invoices to the Accounting Department for payment processing, and files copy for Gift Shop records.

  • Assist in taking, recording and documenting inventor.

  • Serves as a mentor, and provides support and training of new staff members.

  • Directs work performed by volunteers, and provides training to volunteers assigned to the Gift Shop.

  • Communicates and shares information with other staff members and volunteers to ensure that communications are continuous and harmonious.

  • Resolve and handle customer issues effectively.

  • Adheres to all policies, procedures and instructions.

  • Attends department meetings, inservices and training as scheduled.

  • Perform other duties as requested.
