About This Position

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Install or mount a variety of finishing fixtures and equipment throughout the facility including doors, frames, glass, screens, ceilings, hardware, racks, stands, cabinetry, plastic laminate and counter tops, baseboard, floor coverings, leveling and masonry, signage, fixtures and equipment.
  • Repair, replace and perform routine adjustments to standard fixtures, equipment and mechanical controls including partitions, smoke-stops and finishes, ceramic tile, furniture, faucet and flush valve components, thermostats and other room controls, fuses, light bulbs, electrical cords, smoke detector heads and exam lights, beds, stretchers, wheel chairs and other equipment, filters and fan belts, sidewalks and paving.
  • Replace portable hospital equipment including televisions, telephone sets, etc.
  • Inspect, document, report and adjust or react to other than optimum instrument readings on a broad range of equipment and devices including thermostats, thermometers, pressure gauges, humidistats, digital and analog recorders or annunciators, level indicators and other similar devices, enlisting the assistance of skilled mechanics or supervisor, to correct non-routine conditions.
  • Perform routine manual duties including but not limited to moving, hauling, cleaning, washing, trash pickup, and/or demolition.
  • Lubricate and change lubrication for moveable equipment, motors, pumps and hardware.
  • Receive inventory, calculate quantities, requisition and distribute materials and supplies for special projects and routine stock, according to departmental policies.
  • Maintain working area in a clean and orderly condition, performing all job duties in accordance with standard safety procedures and maintaining a safe and comfortable environment for patients, visitors and staff.
  • Function as a liaison within the department, responding to customer, taking necessary corrective action or coordinating work completion when other skills are required.
  • Promote effective working relationships and work cooperatively with other staff members, healthcare professionals and outside contractors, assisting in the completion of major repairs and installations, in order to facilitate the department and Hospital's ability to meet its goals and objectives.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or completion of 3 year certified vocational education.
  • At least 3 years of building maintenance and repair experience in facility maintenance.
  • Ability to utilize common hand tools and a variety of portable and fixed power tools.
  • Ability to understand basic construction drawings, schematics and blueprints.
  • Familiarity with basic operating principles of electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems found in large, complex facilities.
  • Good eye and hand coordination.
  • Job requires physical ability through a full range of motions and positions including bending, pushing, pulling, squatting, and prolonged standing and walking. Ability to lift up to 100 pounds, and to work from ladders and scaffolding.
  • Ability to function in various interior and exterior temperatures and weather extremes.
  • Basic sensory perceptions must be within normal ranges or correctable to that range and must be able to distinguish colors accurately.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Must have basic computer skills and ability to access internet and other programs applicable to Waterbury Hospital procedures.
