Job Description
The Summer English Academy (SEA) at the Connecticut Institute for Refugees and Immigrants (CIRI) is a four-week program focusing on preparing newly arrived refugee youth to succeed at their grade level in the New Haven public school system. This year, up to 50 students aged 6-15 from Afghanistan will participate in ESL, creative arts, science, and Friday field trips.
The Teacher Aide will assist Lead Teachers with providing academic and social support to help refugee youth prepare to enter a classroom setting. Each Teacher Aid will be assigned to a grade grouping. Expected grade groups are 1st - 2nd, 3rd - 5th, and 6th - 7th, 8th – 10th. Exact grade level groupings are subject to change based on student enrollment demographics.
In the afternoons, Teacher Aides will support the various activities, ranging from Art Therapy to outdoor activities with children such as sports, dancing, and games. On Fridays, Teacher Aides will help chaperone Friday field trips to offsite locations.
Position term: July 6th – July 31st, 2025
Pay: $19.50 / hour
Hours:
Pre-program Training and Planning: One to two planning sessions/check ins throughout the month of June (exact times and dates flexible, TBD). Required first aid training on Wednesday, June 24th from 3:00pm – 5:00pm
Main Program: July 6th – July 31st: Monday – Friday, 8:30am-2:00pm (includes breakfast, lunch, classroom instruction between 9:00am-12:00pm and various afternoon activities from 12:30-2:00.) Weekly check-in meeting each Wednesday throughout the duration of SEA at 2:00pm.
Essential Job Function:
•Participate in the Teachers Meet & Greet, instructional planning sessions, pre-program Staff trainings
•With direction from Lead Teachers, assist with implementation of a culturally and age-appropriate curriculum
•Lead and help with afternoon activity sessions
•Reinforce positive classroom management
•Supervise students during breakfast, lunchtime, and breaks
•Be a positive role model for students and staff
•Chaperone on Friday Field Trips
Qualification Requirements:
•Current undergraduate or graduate in education, psychology, social work, or a related field
•Experience providing academic instruction or tutoring services to youth, especially to English Language Learners
•Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations preferred
•Cultural competence and cross-cultural or overseas experience desirable
•Second language proficiency in relevant language desirable (Dari/Persian, Pashto
