This senior leadership role is responsible for driving the strategy, execution, and growth of complex ecosystem restoration and conservation finance projects. The Director of Project Development will oversee a portfolio of innovative initiatives, advising on non-traditional projects and developing creative financing solutions. The position blends day-to-day operational oversight with strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, and cross-functional collaboration. The role requires cultivating partnerships with diverse organizations, Indigenous communities, and public or private entities while guiding a small team to achieve impactful outcomes. Success in this role depends on navigating ambiguity, innovating solutions, and translating complex environmental and financial objectives into actionable projects. Significant travel within the Western U.S. is expected to build relationships and gain on-the-ground insights.
- Lead the development and execution of conservation finance projects, including Forest Resilience Bonds and other innovative financing vehicles.
- Manage a portfolio of projects, providing strategic guidance, operational oversight, and mentorship to project teams.
- Cultivate and maintain long-term relationships with partner organizations, funders, land managers, government agencies, and Indigenous communities.
- Develop consulting strategies and frameworks for engagement with public and private beneficiaries.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with science, finance, communications, and Indigenous partnerships teams to identify new opportunities and geographies.
- Oversee department processes, systems, and documentation to ensure operational efficiency and continuous improvement.
- Represent projects in external meetings, conferences, and stakeholder events, with travel as required.
Requirements:
- 10+ years of experience in organizational leadership, project development, management consulting, or business development, preferably with a focus on environmental, ecosystem restoration, or sustainability projects.
- Strong strategic thinking, results-driven mindset, and ability to prioritize competing needs in complex, ambiguous contexts.
- Demonstrated experience building and managing teams, developing talent, and supervising staff.
- Expertise in relationship management and business development with diverse stakeholders, including executive-level partners and Indigenous communities.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, capable of distilling complex ideas into presentations, memos, and collaborative discussions.
- Track record of developing new programs, products, or processes and driving them from concept to implementation.
- Commitment to continuous learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, and environmental impact.
- Ability to travel up to 25–30%, particularly within the Western U.S., and work remotely across multiple time zones.
