The Certified Medical Coder – Orthopedic Specialty is responsible for accurately reviewing, coding, and abstracting medical documentation for orthopedic procedures and services. This role ensures compliance with national coding guidelines, payer regulations, and organizational policies while supporting optimal reimbursement and minimizing denials. The coder works closely with providers, clinical staff, and billing teams to ensure accurate and timely coding of complex orthopedic cases.
Requirements:- Review and analyze medical records, operative reports, and clinical documentation to assign appropriate codes.
- Accurately code diagnoses and procedures using ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II coding systems.
- Apply orthopedic-specific coding knowledge, including fractures, joint replacements, arthroscopy, spine procedures, and durable medical equipment (DME).
- Ensure compliance with federal regulations, payer guidelines, and industry standards (e.g., NCCI edits, Medicare guidelines).
- Ensure adherence to Official Coding Guidelines and HIPAA regulations.
- Identify documentation deficiencies and collaborate with providers to obtain clarification when needed.
- Assist in resolving coding-related claim denials and rejections.
- Maintain productivity and accuracy standards established by the organization.
- Participate in coding audits and quality improvement initiatives.
- Stay current on coding updates, regulatory changes, and payer policies related to orthopedic services.
- Support education efforts for providers and staff regarding coding best practices.
- Strong knowledge of orthopedic anatomy, procedures, and terminology.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to interpret complex operative reports.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Effective communication and collaboration with providers and staff.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate degree in Health Information Management or related field preferred.
- Minimum of 2–3 years of medical coding experience required.
- At least 1–2 years of orthopedic coding experience strongly preferred.
- Experience with surgical coding (orthopedic procedures) required.
- Knowledge of electronic health records (EHR) and practice management systems.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite of products.
Certifications:
One of the following active certifications:
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC) – AAPC
- Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) – AAPC
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) – AHIMA
Preferred:
- Certified Orthopedic Surgery Coder (COSC) – AAPC
Work Environment:
- Clinical office environment.
