Job Overview

S&L Inc is seeking two experienced General Superintendents to lead field operations across multiple heavy civil construction projects throughout Salt Lake and Utah Counties. This is a senior-level field leadership role responsible for managing manpower, equipment, subcontractors, budgets, schedules, and safety across varied and complex job sites.

As a key bridge between Project Management and Field Operations, the General Superintendent ensures projects are executed safely, efficiently, and profitably. This role requires strong leadership, deep heavy civil expertise, and the ability to anticipate and resolve construction challenges before they impact schedule or cost.

Key Responsibilities
  • Create, maintain, and clearly communicate short-term lookahead schedules covering manpower, equipment, trucking, and subcontractor coordination.

  • Oversee and direct either one large-scale project or multiple heavy civil construction sites concurrently, ensuring operational efficiency and performance standards are met.

  • Coordinate closely with Project Managers to ensure field operations align with budget, schedule, and scope

  • Supervise and mentor Level I Superintendents, Foremen, Operators, and field crews

  • Ensure projects remain safe, productive, and cost-effective

  • Conduct weekly safety meetings and enforce OSHA and company safety standards

  • Review plans, specifications, RFIs, submittals, and change orders

  • Manage and document time & material work and proposed change orders

  • Communicate daily with inspectors, city officials, owners, subcontractors, and vendors

  • Oversee GPS-controlled equipment operations and survey/staking coordination

  • Verify daily field logs, time reporting, and production tracking

  • Identify and resolve performance issues within crews or subcontractors

  • Maintain strict quality control and uphold S&Ls reputation for excellence

Qualifications
  • 7+ years of heavy civil construction experience

  • 3+ years in a leadership role managing crews or projects

  • Strong expertise in excavation, underground utilities, grading (mass and finish), demo, structural and flatwork preparation

  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, soils reports, and contract documents

  • Strong construction math and production rate knowledge

  • Experience operating and understanding capabilities of heavy equipment

  • Comfortable using construction technology including digital plans, timekeeping apps, GPS machine control systems

  • Experience with Topcon GPS systems preferred (training available)

  • Experience with Autodesk Build / PlanGrid preferred

  • Ability to manage multiple conversations, projects, and teams simultaneously

  • Strong verbal communication and conflict resolution skills

  • Valid drivers license with clean driving record

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred

Work Schedule

  • Occasional extended hours depending on project needs
