About This Position

The R&D Specialist supports product development, quality initiatives, and continuous improvement efforts within Lakewood. This role develops formulas, maintains product and raw material specifications, supports QA documentation, and assists with new product development and product improvement projects. The position works closely with Sales, QA, Production, and Procurement to ensure high‑quality, consistent products that meet customer and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in R&D projects, including new product development and product improvement initiatives.
  • Develop new formulas and reformulate existing products based on market trends, cost optimization, and Sales requests.
  • Perform sensory evaluations of raw materials and finished products and recommend formula adjustments to maintain quality and consistency.
  • Create, update, and maintain raw material specifications, finished goods specifications, and batch sheets for production.
  • Document R&D activities such as formulas, trials, evaluations, and project reports, and provide progress updates to the QA Manager.
  • Assist with formula reviews, nutrition facts, and coordination of third‑party laboratory testing.
  • Review Certificates of Analysis (COAs) for raw materials and finished goods.
  • Prepare and send samples to laboratories as part of company testing programs.
  • Assist in developing and updating SOPs and other R&D/QA documentation, including forms, checklists, and related materials.
  • Support customer complaint investigations and non‑conformance resolutions.
  • Perform administrative tasks such as data entry, document filing, and cross‑department communication.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the QA Manager.

Qualifications, Skills & Competencies:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent work experience in food R&D.
  • Preferred: Experience in food manufacturing and familiarity with HACCP, FSMA, Organic/Non-GMO/Kosher standards.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong critical thinking.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
