About This Position

Description:

The Bilingual Medical Assistant and Referral Coordinator serves as a member of the health care team through direct patient care, laboratory services, referral coordination, scheduling of diagnostic tests, obtaining medical records, assisting with other Medical Clinic programs as needed, and providing interpreter services for Spanish-speaking patients to best serve our patient population.

Hours: 30.5 hours per week (4-day workweek)

Essential Duties:

The following job functions that are essential to this role:

Medical Assistant: Provides direct patient care daily by:

  • Conducting client check-ins (vitals/charts).
  • Administering vaccines.
  • Preparing supplies and documents for clinics.
  • Keeping rooms fully stocked.
  • Triaging client calls regarding medical concerns.
  • Scribing for provider appointments when necessary.
  • Collaborating with Patient Care Director for patient care concerns and follow up.

Lab Assistant: Performs venipuncture for in-house and sends out laboratory testing by:

  • Collecting lab samples and preparing for lab pickup following established guidelines.
  • Working with Lab Coordinator to ensure paperwork is coded correctly and all patient identifiers are accurate prior to phlebotomy clinics.
  • Utilizing in-house laboratory testing equipment.
  • Managing hazardous waste in accordance with OSHA regulations and following DOT training requirements.

Referral Coordinator: Manages all referrals daily by:

  • Verifying patient eligibility.
  • Submitting referrals through Access Now Fhases interface or other appropriate channel.
  • Tracking referrals to completion with documentation in the EMR.
  • Acting as a liaison between ordering providers and outside specialists.
  • Requesting medical records from outside providers and maintaining strict HIPAA compliance with hospital EMR systems.
  • Processing requests for medical records to send to outside parties.
  • Assisting with scheduling clients for diagnostic testing and communicating details with them.

Assistant PAP Coordinator:

  • Procuring medications and vaccines through the Pharmacy Assistance Program.
  • Documenting chain of custody in compliance with the VA Board of Pharmacy.

Collaborates with the Development Department to collect stories and photos from clients, staff, and volunteers to promote the mission of the organization.

Completes other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

The following represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform the essential functions of the job.

  • Bilingual Spanish/English is required.
  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Phlebotomy certification is required. Can be achieved during orientation if necessary.
  • CPR certification is required.
  • 1-3 years of basic phlebotomy experience is preferred.
  • Experience in a lab setting and/or medical office environment is preferred.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and collaborate with different programs.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize tasks appropriately.
  • Ability to self-identify limitations regarding skills and knowledge and seek assistance to ensure patient safety and optimize quality of care.
  • Commitment to the mission of GoochlandCares.
  • Ability to work with a variety of volunteers and in different types of care situations.
  • Understand that all employees participate in engaging volunteers to help fulfill our mission.

Technical Skills:

  • Experience with Microsoft Office products is required.
  • Experience with electronic medical records is preferred.

Physical Requirements and Environmental Conditions:

  • Prolonged periods of talking to others.
  • Prolonged periods of repetitive movements, including typing.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds at times.
  • Must wear personal protective equipment as needed (mask, gown, gloves, goggles, etc.).
  • Occasional exposure to cleaning chemicals for infectious control purposes and potentially hazardous bodily fluids.
