Position Summary
This is an ONSITE position located in Bethesda, MD.
NCC is seeking an Assistant Audio Visual (AV) Engineer to join a team of professionals at the NIH, the nation’s premier scientific and medical research centers. This position plays a vital role in ensuring the successful execution of AV services by supervising AV specialists, interpreting technical drawings, maintaining system functionality, and supporting hybrid video conferencing technologies. The ideal candidate will be a technically skilled leader with excellent communication skills and a commitment to continuous learning. This core team will have access to support, education, and leadership from the wider NCC team at NIH as well as our corporate offices.

Key Areas of Responsibility
- Install, operate, and maintain computerized audio and video systems, including presentation and production technology.
- Configure and troubleshoot various computers (PC and Apple) to interface with AV systems, display equipment, television production equipment, and LAN networks.
- Set up and troubleshoot hybrid video conferencing technologies and software platforms.
- Ensure all AV systems adhere to current UHD/HD broadcast video production standards.
- Communicate technical capabilities of AV systems effectively to non-technical staff, including conference service specialists, lecturers, and meeting facilitators.
- Collaborate with presenters and NIH desktop support to resolve computer display issues promptly.
- Interpret blueprints, AV system drawings, and specifications for AV communication facilities.
- Create and maintain technical documentation and training materials as needed.
- Participate in continuing education to stay updated on the latest digital and IP AV system advancements.
- Understand and configure IT network components, including security protocols, IP addresses, switchers, and routers.
- Monitor and maintain AV system functionality to ensure 100% operational readiness.
- Participate in special projects as required, contributing to continuous improvement efforts.
- Assist with inventory management, including tracking, ordering, and maintaining AV supplies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust Clearance (Must be able to pass a criminal background and credit check).
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical/vocational training in electronics, AV, IT, or related field preferred.
- 2+ years of hands-on experience installing professional AV systems (corporate, education, or commercial environments strongly preferred).
- Proficiency with AV installation tools, cable termination techniques, and testing equipment (e.g., multimeters, cable testers, tone generators, HDMI testers).
- Working knowledge of AV industry standards and protocols (HDMI, HDBaseT, Dante, AV-over-IP, Crestron/Extron/AMX control systems).
- Basic understanding of networking concepts (IP addressing, VLANs, PoE) and signal flow for audio/video systems.
- Comfortable working at heights (ladders, lifts, scaffolding) and lifting up to 50–75 lbs.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and customer-service skills for interacting with clients, contractors, and team members.
Preferred Qualifications
- CTS (Certified Technology Specialist) – Installation or General (AVIXA) or equivalent.
- Manufacturer-specific certifications (e.g., Crestron CTI, Extron ECS, Biamp Tesira, Q-SYS Level 1, Dante Certification).
- BICSI Installer or Technician certification.
- Experience with video wall installations, digital signage, or UC/video conferencing deployments.
Special Position Requirements
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30am-4:30pm, with flexibility to meet business needs.
Environment/Physical Demands: Standing for periods of time, walking throughout campus to each conference room/event space, ability to be mobile to perform above duties. Ability to lift heavy equipment, climb ladders, and work in various positions (standing, kneeling, overhead). Ability to work in construction environments with dust, noise, and temperature variations.
