Job Overview

D. Grimm, Inc. is seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Civil Estimator to join our growing civil construction team. This role plays a critical part in the success of our infrastructure projects by developing accurate, competitive, and comprehensive cost estimates. The Civil Estimator will review plans and specifications, perform detailed takeoffs, collaborate with subcontractors and vendors, and support the bid process from pre-bid meetings through final proposal submission.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review project plans, specifications, and bid documents in detail.

  • Perform comprehensive quantity takeoffs from construction drawings.

  • Track and incorporate addendums throughout the bidding process.

  • Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits as required.

  • Gather and analyze pricing from vendors and subcontractors.

  • Research materials, labor rates, and market conditions to ensure competitive pricing.

  • Identify long-lead items and define delivery timelines.

  • Build and maintain bid templates in B2W estimating software.

  • Develop preliminary project schedules using Microsoft Project.

  • Collaborate with project managers, contractors, and clients throughout the estimating process.

  • Prepare and submit Requests for Information (RFIs) when clarification is needed.

  • Estimate production rates for specified civil work tasks.

  • Prepare comprehensive bid proposals and supporting documentation.

  • Identify scope exclusions and clarifications within proposals.

  • Review contract requirements including start dates, delivery deadlines, payment terms, liquidated damages, taxes, bonding, insurance requirements, safety protocols, apprenticeship requirements, and deliverables.

  • Maintain organized records of estimates and project documentation.

  • Report to management according to the organizational structure.

Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred (or equivalent industry experience).

  • Previous estimating experience in civil construction preferred.

  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills.

  • Ability to interpret construction plans, specifications, and technical documents.

  • Proficiency in estimating software (B2W preferred) and Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Experience with Microsoft Project scheduling software preferred.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines simultaneously.

  • Understanding of civil construction processes, materials, and production rates.
