About This Position
Description:
The Human Service Worker, or HSW, is responsible for conducting the day-to-day operations of the Goodwill Inn. This requisition is for second shift availability: 1:45pm-12am, 4 days per week.
Essential Functions:
- Executing the day-to-day operational functions associated with a low-barrier, housing-focused emergency shelter.
- Supporting clients with needs at the Goodwill Inn.
- Answering phones, emails, preparing documents and entering case notes into HMIS.
Primary Responsibilities/ Essential Functions:
- Support the mission and vision of Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan.
- Perform work in a safe manner by observing all Goodwill safety policies and procedures.
- Interact with all Goodwill team members, clients, and customers in a professional manner.
- Respect the diversity of others, including but not limited to, those with cultural, ethnic, and gender differences, individuals experiencing homelessness, and persons with visible and non-visible disabilities.
- Ensure the confidentiality of all persons served.
- Provide a safe, dignified, and respectful environment for all persons served.
- Knowledge and understanding of Goodwill Inn’s policies and procedures as trained and outlined in Client Services Policies and training materials.
- Knowledge of emergency procedures to safely evacuate the building for emergencies or to move guests to a designated safe area according to established procedures as indicated in other emergencies.
- Responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and safety of physical facility and grounds.
- Ensure compliance with Goodwill Inn’s guest expectations, working alongside guests to meet the set expectations.
- Responsible for intake process and exit of guests.
- Responsible for the accurate records of daily events data collection and HMIS data entry.
- Provide support and information to guests.
- Responsible for the safety of all guests and visitors and compliance with Inn policies.
- Ensure accurate guest sign-in records.
- Provide community resource information as needed.
- Monitor incoming and outgoing guests and visitors to the shelter.
- Accept donations from the community and document donations; issue receipts as required.
- Provide Inter-agency communication as necessary to secure emergency lodging or assistance for those who must be turned away when the shelter is at capacity.
- Assist or attend to an ill or injured person within certification guidelines after summoning professional 911 emergency medical care.
- Follow all procedures for documentation of any injury or incident.
- Attend trainings and staff meetings as scheduled.
- Other duties as assigned by the Management Staff.
Education, Licenses, Certifications and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED required; some college in human services field preferred.
- Some post-secondary education in human services field preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Knowledge and understanding of circumstances and issues of homelessness.
- Previous experience in counseling, human services, housing, substance abuse and/or job placement preferred.
- Good phone etiquette, able to type 30wpm and basic computer knowledge.
- Able to multitask.
Physical & Other Requirements:
- Standing, lifting, carrying, pushing, bending, kneeling, reaching, walking, walking on uneven surfaces, hearing, seeing, twisting, turning and repetitive movement.
- Ability to do medium lifting, 20-30 pounds, and occasional heavy lifting.
- Able to sit, stand, work at a computer, bend, kneel, twist.
