STAFF NURSE NON UNION PER DIEM - EMERGENCY ROOM

Basic Function:

A staff nurse is a professional nurse who delegates and coordinates patient care, based upon a documented assessment of the patient’s needs. The staff nurse applies the nursing process of assessment, planning interventions, implementing the plan of care, and evaluation care. The nurse is a patient advocate, who in conjunction with the other members of the health care team; guides the patient safely through the hospital stay. An Emergency Department RN must develop and maintain clinical expertise in nursing care of the critically ill while maintaining the standards of care within the framework of the Ohio Nurse Practice Act.

Job Duties:

  1. Maintains the standards of nursing care of the Emergency Department.
  2. Follows policies, standards, protocols and procedures of the hospital and the Emergency Department.
  3. Provides a safe environment for the patient.
  4. Assesses condition, nursing needs and sets goals; prescribes nursing action to meet nursing goals.
  5. Provides patient/family education and support.
  6. Assists physician with tests and procedures.
  7. Administers medications and performs treatments according to policy and procedure.
  8. Participates in economical utilization of supplies.
  9. Coordinates nursing care of patients in accordance with identified patients’ needs.
  10. Evaluates nursing care provided to patients.
  11. Participates in orientation of new personnel.
  12. Demonstrates ability to competently provide individualized goal directed nursing care to patients through the use of assessment.
  13. Performs rapid assessment of critically ill patients.
  14. Able to direct and participate in resuscitative effort.
  15. Understands and utilizes airway management principles for the critically ill including ventilator support.
  16. Recognizes and interprets cardiac rhythms.
  17. Able to initiate, titrate, and maintain medicated drips and pharmacological medications.
  18. Able to enter orders and access patient data via computer.
  19. Responsible for checking emails and on line learning assignments on a regular basis.

Age Appropriate Care:

Colleague has been instructed in providing customer service and on interacting with age groups as related to the department's general client population: including use of appropriate interventions, communication and skills to match the age and/or abilities of the patient/family.

Education Training and Experience:

  • Graduate of School of Nursing, who maintains required CNE’s.
  • Currently licensed by the Ohio State Board of Nursing.
  • Has been actively employed in hospital-based nursing within the past five years, or completion of a state approved RN refresher course within the past year or is a recent graduate of a state approved school of nursing (RN).
  • Shows evidence of participation in continuing education and the unit based Quality Assurance Program.
  • Successful completion of the Registered Nurse Orientation Program at Alliance Community Hospital.
  • Successful completion of any additional educational requirements of the hospital or the emergency department.
  • Maintains current BLS certification through American Heart Association.
  • Maintain and or obtain within 18 months: PALS and NRP certifications
  • Maintain and or obtain within 6 months: ACLS
  • Maintain and or obtain within 3 months: CIDE certification.
  • Maintain and or obtain NIH Stroke Scale Certification within six months.
  • Must be able to work effectively with physicians, all ED staff, and other departments.
  • Joins and maintains membership in ONA and the Alliance local unit of ONA within 31 days of employment, if applicable.
  • Certified Emergency Nurse preferred
  • TNCC certification preferred
  • Must be computer-literate to complete task(s) as required.

Machine, Tools, and Equipment used:

Must be knowledgeable of all instruments and supplies used in the emergency department.

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to stand/walk for duration of shift.
  • Able to bend to reach items on floor or bedside level.
  • Able to reach, lean, or stretch as necessary.
  • Able to reach overhead or to reach over a bed far enough to give care and turn patients.
  • Able to push or pull patients or necessary equipment (i.e. wheelchair, ED cart, paramedic cart).
  • Able to lift 50 lbs. intermittently, unassisted.
  • Able to move/transfer and ambulate patients unassisted and/or assisted as necessary using good body mechanics or appropriate techniques (i.e. slide board).
  • Able to wear personal protective equipment for an extended period of time, as necessary, (i.e. mask, goggles, etc.).
  • Able to assist or support patient while ambulating.
  • Able to turn and twist as necessary.
  • Able to squat, kneel, or crawl as necessary.
  • Ability to see clearly and hear normal speaking voices.
  • Able to communicate verbally and over the telephone in a clear speech.
  • Able to write clearly.
