We are looking to add new talent to our growing team! We are currently seeking a Staff Environmental Scientist 1 to work in a technical support role with highly skilled professionals on diverse project teams in a dynamic environment. This is an excellent opportunity to join a growing group and company and get involved in a variety of projects for a diverse range of clients. This is a temporary, full-time position located in our Rochester, NY office.
In this role, you will support our energy market segment primarily with natural resource permitting services for energy transmission (gas and electric), utility-scale energy generation (such as natural gas-fired power plants), as well as renewable energy (solar, storage, wind) projects. You will be responsible for conducting routine field and office data collection, analysis, and reporting, including delineation of wetlands and streams, ecological surveys, site reconnaissance, and SWPPP/E&S inspections. You will collect and manage field data using GPS, GIS systems, and digital field data forms, and synthesize findings into technical deliverables and project reports. You will also support technical evaluations for compliance with applicable regulations and assist in mapping, communications, and the documentation required for permitting and project execution. All work must be carried out in accordance with company and client Health & Safety protocols.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
In this position, you will:
- Conduct routine data collection, analysis, and reporting using approved standard procedures appropriate for this discipline.
- Conduct field surveys such as the delineation of natural resources (wetlands, streams, and wildlife habitat) using standard industry protocols.
- Collect and manage field data (use of GPS, GIS, digital data forms, soil boring logs, water sampling data sheets, etc.) and synthesize the data into standard reporting deliverables.
- Assist with wetland and stream delineation surveys, ecological surveys, drill/test pit explorations, and water sampling.
- Assist in identifying technical issues and regulatory compliance strategies.
- Conduct site reconnaissance and other routine data collection activities such as SWPPP/E&S inspections.
- Document project-related activities including project communications and data management.
- Draft technical reports and create project mapping using GIS.
- Perform all work in accordance with company and client health and safety protocols.
SKILLS/EXPERIENCE
Minimum Skills and Requirements:
- High school, associates or some college courses in Environmental Science or related natural science discipline.
- 0 to 3 years of related experience, including internships.
- Proficient technical writing, verbal communication, reasoning, and time management skills.
- Able to work independently or with minimal direction in performing tasks and assignments under the direction of senior staff.
- Desire to learn and grow in your profession, demonstrate a positive attitude, strong work ethic, resourcefulness, flexibility, and ownership.
- Must comply with company and client Health & Safety protocols.
- Detail oriented, organized, and demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Able to meet the physical requirements of the position: lift 50 lbs., traverse unstable/sloping sites and landscapes, work outside in a range of weather conditions, and have the stamina for moderate physical activity for the majority of field working hours.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with conducting natural resources field surveys and/or construction environmental compliance monitoring.
- Experience supporting natural resources permitting, ideally for energy projects.
- Good working knowledge of GIS/CAD and experience using a mapping grade GPS.
The salary range for this position in Rochester, NY is $27.00 - $30.00 hourly. Actual compensation will be based upon a variety of factors such as education, related work experience, certificates, skills, and current market conditions. Haley & Aldrich reviews salary ranges each quarter to assess competitiveness with the market.
