In this role, you will lead the technical direction and implementation of mission-critical software systems supporting high-impact federal modernization initiatives. You will act as both a hands-on engineer and a technical leader, guiding development teams while shaping architecture, system design, and delivery strategy. The position involves working across full-stack applications, databases, and cloud-based environments to ensure scalable, secure, and high-performing solutions. You will collaborate closely with stakeholders to translate complex requirements into effective technical solutions while maintaining system reliability and operational excellence. In addition to driving engineering execution, you will mentor and support less senior developers, helping build strong technical capability across the team. This is a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment focused on civic technology, innovation, and continuous improvement.
You will define technical direction, lead engineering execution, and ensure the successful delivery of scalable software solutions across complex systems.
- Own the technical approach, architecture, and implementation strategy for key software workstreams.
- Develop, design, and enhance full-stack applications and specialized software solutions aligned with client needs.
- Analyze user and system requirements to design efficient, scalable, and maintainable software systems.
- Support database design, development, and optimization, including SQL analysis and performance tuning.
- Lead and mentor software engineers, providing technical direction, code guidance, and best practices.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure system reliability, availability, and performance across environments.
- Contribute to continuous improvement in development processes, tooling, and system architecture.
You bring strong full-stack development expertise, technical leadership experience, and the ability to thrive in complex, fast-moving environments.
- 11+ years of software development experience with a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
- Strong proficiency in programming languages such as Java, JavaScript, Python, TypeScript, Ruby on Rails, or ReactJS.
- Experience with both front-end and back-end development, including modern frameworks and UI/UX considerations.
- Solid understanding of databases such as MySQL or PostgreSQL, as well as web servers like nginx.
- Proven leadership experience mentoring and guiding engineering teams in technical delivery.
- Ability to quickly learn new technologies and adapt to evolving project requirements.
- Strong communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder collaboration skills.
- Exposure to or interest in DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, AWS, Docker, or Kubernetes is a plus.
- Must be a U.S. citizen eligible to obtain Public Trust clearance.
- Competitive salary range of approximately $130,000 to $165,000 annually (based on experience and skills)
