Position Summary
We are seeking a leader who is excited to build and champion a recognizable safety brand, someone who sees safety not just as a compliance function, but as a strategic platform for culture, innovation and industry leadership. This Vice President of Safety ensures the organization operates with the highest safety standards while maintaining full compliance with OSHA, DOT, and all applicable regulatory requirements.
This role serves as the ultimate authority and accountability for safety performance across the organization, driving a proactive safety culture that prioritizes employee well-being, operational excellence, and risk mitigation.
The Vice President of Safety partners closely with executive leadership, operational teams, and field personnel to integrate safety into all aspects of company operations. This leader is expected to be both strategic and hands-on, actively engaging in field operations, investigations, and program development when necessary to ensure safety initiatives are effectively implemented.
The position plays a critical role in protecting employees, controlling risk exposure, improving operational performance, and reinforcing the company’s commitment to a culture where safety is a core business value.
Key Responsibilities
Safety Strategy and Leadership
- Develop and execute a company-wide safety vision and strategy aligned with organizational goals and operational objectives.
- Establish and maintain a proactive safety culture across all BCTS divisions that prioritizes employee health, hazard prevention, and operational accountability.
- Serve as the executive leader responsible for all safety performance outcomes across the organization.
- Partner with the President and senior leadership team to ensure safety initiatives support company growth, operational excellence, and risk management objectives.
- Lead the development of long-term safety goals, metrics, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Regulatory Compliance and Risk Management
- Ensure full compliance with OSHA, DOT, and all applicable federal, state, and local safety regulations.
- Serve as the company’s primary executive liaison with regulatory agencies including OSHA inspectors and investigators.
- Develop and maintain corporate safety policies, procedures, and the company Safety Manual.
- Monitor regulatory changes and ensure company programs remain compliant and aligned with industry best practices.
- Oversee accident investigations and ensure proper root cause analysis and corrective actions are implemented.
- Manage company risk exposure related to workplace incidents, injuries, and environmental hazards.
Enterprise Safety Program Oversight
- Oversee the development and implementation of safety programs across multiple divisions and operating locations.
- Lead regular safety audits, jobsite inspections, and safety performance evaluations.
- Establish company-wide safety standards for jobsite preparation, environmental conditions, and operational practices.
- Oversee management of Safety Data Sheets (SDS/MSDS), safety documentation, and compliance reporting.
- Lead the company Safety Committee and coordinate cross-divisional safety initiatives.
Incident Management and Insurance Coordination
- Oversee the management of Workers’ Compensation, Auto Liability, and General Liability programs and related claims.
- Coordinate incident investigations, reporting requirements, and corrective actions.
- Work with insurance carriers and risk management partners to reduce claims exposure and improve loss performance.
- Develop strategies to reduce workplace injuries, accidents, and insurance costs.
Safety Training and Workforce Development
- Establish and oversee company-wide safety training programs for field personnel, supervisors, and management.
- Ensure employees receive appropriate safety orientation and ongoing training.
- Provide leadership and coaching to operational managers to strengthen safety leadership at all levels.
- Promote employee engagement in hazard identification, safety reporting, and risk prevention.
Operational Engagement
- Maintain a strong field presence through regular jobsite visits, safety audits, and direct engagement with employees.
- Demonstrate a hands-on leadership approach, actively participating in safety initiatives, investigations, and program improvements when necessary.
- Work directly with field leadership to resolve safety challenges and implement effective solutions.
- Identify opportunities to improve operational safety processes and efficiency.
Leadership and Organizational Collaboration
- Build strong partnerships with divisional leadership to ensure safety is integrated into operational decision-making.
- Foster collaboration across departments including operations, HR, risk management, and finance.
- Provide executive-level reporting on safety performance, risks, and improvement initiatives.
- Influence and guide leadership teams in making safety-conscious business decisions.
Accountability
The Vice President of Safety is accountable for the overall safety performance of the organization, including incident rates, regulatory compliance, risk exposure, and the effectiveness of company safety programs.
This role is responsible for ensuring safety initiatives contribute to operational productivity, employee well-being, and long-term organizational success.
Qualifications
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Construction Management, Industrial Safety, or a related field preferred.
Experience
Minimum 10–15 years of progressive safety leadership experience, including experience overseeing safety programs within construction, mechanical, or electrical contracting environments.
Experience managing safety programs across multiple divisions, projects, or operational units is strongly preferred.
Certifications (Preferred)
Professional certifications such as:
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
- Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST)
- OSHA 500/510 Trainer
- Other relevant safety certifications
Technical Knowledge
- OSHA Construction Standards (29 CFR 1926)
- OSHA General Industry Standards (29 CFR 1910)
- DOT regulations and compliance requirements
- Incident investigation and root cause analysis
- Risk management and insurance coordination

Physical Demands and Work Environment
The role requires a combination of office-based work and frequent field visits field locations.
The Vice President of Safety must be able to:
- Travel up to 50% to jobsites across company locations as required.
- Walk, stand, and navigate job site environments.
- Communicate effectively with employees, customers, vendors, and regulatory officials.
- Use computers and office equipment to perform administrative and reporting tasks.
