About This Position
The Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) is the democratically elected National Government of the Red River Métis, also known as the Manitoba Métis. The Red River Métis are a distinct Indigenous Nation and People, and Canada's Negotiating Partners in Confederation and the Founders of the Province of Manitoba.
The MMF seeks to fill one full-time Community Justice Navigator position within our Métis Justice Institute Department located in Winnipeg, MB. The Community Justice Navigator will provide support, advocacy, and community navigation for Red River Métis citizens involved in the criminal justice system at any stage of their journey. This position will aim to mitigate social isolation and stigma experienced by Red River Métis citizens, address criminogenic factors, and remove barriers to help-seeking.
Job Duties/Competencies:
- Conduct community outreach to offer support and advocacy for Red River Métis citizens;
- Perform client intake to identify needs and locate suitable resources;
- Develop strategies for addressing various situations accurately;
- Manage cases by identifying client needs and aiding in navigating the justice system based on their involvement level;
- Collaborate with other professionals to develop client program plans;
- Maintain communication with agencies, professionals, government officials, and the community;
- Help Red River Métis citizens identify and overcome barriers to accessing resources.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in criminal justice, Social Sciences, or related fields, or equivalent experience and training;
- Experience in the justice field is considered an asset;
- Experience in case planning and conducting needs assessments;
- Familiarity with justice issues affecting Indigenous peoples;
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Programs;
- Strong organizational, interpersonal and time management skills;
- Experience working with boards and/or committees is preferred;
- Acceptable Criminal Record Check with a Vulnerable Sector Search;
- Experience working for a not-for-profit organization and Indigenous community is an asset;
- Knowledge of Red River Métis culture, MMF programs and services is a definite asset; and,
- Ability to travel, valid Manitoba Driver’s license with access to a reliable vehicle.
