Reporting to the Sr. R&D Sensory Manager, the Lab Assistant supports sample analysis, product development, sensory, vendor communication, and implementation of test methodologies and equipment as part of the Coffee, Innovation, R&D and Quality teams. The Lab Assistant will also maintain labs and supplies. This is a full-time, hourly position.
Location: Emeryville, CA – 5 days onsite
Schedule: Full-Time
Hourly: $24-28/hr.
What You Will Do
- Coordinate and assist with technical and sensory testing for new innovation product development and sensory activities internally, with vendors, and outside labs.
- Assist with product tastings for beverage, AFH, consumer and food product development as needed.
- Maintain schedules for tests and sensory activities in labs and other spaces as needed.
- Collect, log, and summarize testing results for product development and research.
- Coordinate shipping of ingredients, samples, and installation/take down of test equipment for product development and research purposes.
- Support development and maintenance of product specification documents (product/ingredient specifications, nutritional information etc.)
- Ensure that labs are clean, organized, and set up to maximize R&D productivity.
- Maintain and order tasting samples, ingredients, and supplies for all labs. Manage ingredients and sample library.
- Calibrate/prime and maintain test equipment as needed.
- Coordinate/schedule vendor meetings and correspond with trade as needed.
- Facilitate equipment, ingredients and smallware needs for photo shoots and other marketing activities.
Who You Are
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both orally and in writing.
- Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and able to handle multiple projects at the same time.
- Strong coffee, tea, and culinary knowledge.
- Excellent sensory skills required.
- BS in Chemistry, Biology or other related technical field preferred.
- Some familiarity with home and commercial coffee equipment preferred.
- Computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office, and ability to master other software (e.g. Genesis, FoodLogiQ)

The target hourly range for this position is $24-28/hour. The actual base pay offered will depend on a variety of factors, including the applicant’s qualifications, years of relevant experience, specific and unique skills, level of education, certifications or licenses, other legitimate non-discriminatory business factors, and the geographic location of the role. In addition to base pay, individuals in this position may also be eligible to earn bonuses.
