About This Position

Position Summary

The Certified Welder fabricates, assembles, and repairs metal components using processes such as SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, and GTAW in accordance with approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), engineering drawings, and applicable codes (e.g., D17.1). The role is accountable for producing code-compliant welds, maintaining a safe work environment, and supporting overall production quality and efficiency.

Typical Activities

Welding & Fabrication

• Set up, tack, and complete welds on plate, pipe, and structural assemblies. Complete tasks with accuracy and focus on quality with minimal supervision.
• Select proper filler metals, gas mixtures, and machine settings per WPS.
• Perform weld repairs and finishing (grinding, gouging) as required.

Blueprint & WPS Interpretation

• Read and interpret blueprints, isometrics, weld symbols, and WPS documents.
• Verify joint preparation, fit-up, and dimensions before welding.

Inspection & Documentation

• Conduct visual inspections; measure weld size, length, and alignment.
• Complete weld logs, traveler sheets, and traceability records accurately.

Equipment & Tool Maintenance

• Perform daily checks and basic preventive maintenance on welding machines, torches, and PPE.
• Report equipment malfunctions promptly.

Safety & Compliance

• Follow OSHA, company, and customer safety rules (PPE, LOTO, hot-work permits).
• Participate in safety audits, toolbox talks, and continuous-improvement initiatives.

Collaboration & Continuous Improvement

• Work closely with QA/QC, engineering, and fellow fabricators to resolve issues.
• Suggest process improvements to reduce rework and increase throughput.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: High-school diploma or GED.
  • Certification: Current AWS Certified Welder credential (e.g., AWS D1.1 structural steel, aerospace aluminum or ASME IX pipe). Ability to pass company-administered 3G/4G plate and/or 6G pipe weld tests.
  • Experience: 3+ years of industrial or structural welding experience.
  • Technical Skills:
    1. Proficiency in SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, GTAW.
    2. Ability to read blueprints, weld symbols, and tape measures/calipers accurately.
    3. Basic shop math and fraction/decimal conversions.
  • Soft Skills: Great problem-solving skills, strong attention to detail, commitment to safety, and teamwork.
  • Physical Requirements: Lift/carry up to 50 lbs., stand for extended periods, climb ladders, work in confined spaces or elevated positions, tolerate heat, fumes, and noise (hearing protection provided).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience welding stainless steel or aluminum alloys. Proficient in structural aluminum (tig preferred).
  • Ability to maintain tight tolerance with weldments per print requirements.
  • Forklift or overhead-crane certification.
  • Blueprint reading capabilities

Working Conditions & Schedule

  • Typical schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m. with overtime and weekend work as production demands.
  • Shop and/or field settings; exposure to welding arcs, grinding sparks, fumes, and varying temperatures. Company provides required PPE and fume extraction.
