Job Summary

Plans, organizes, develops and directs the nursing care and programs for the Masonic and Eastern Star Home Care Center in accordance with current applicable federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations, and as may be directed, to assure that the highest degree of quality resident care can be maintained at all times.

Essential Functions

1. Plans, organizes, evaluates and directs all Care Center nursing care and programs.

2. Supervises and evaluates assigned staff. Sees that evaluations are completed on time. Conducts interviews and makes recommendations regarding hiring, training, termination, discipline and transfer of employees. Arranges for or conducts in‑service training for staff. Coordinates in-service education with Staff Development Coordinator and consults with staff development personnel on problem areas. Assures annually that staff is properly licensed and certified by the North Carolina Board of Nursing and Nurse Aide Registry .

3. Develops and maintains nursing care objectives and standards. Forecasts the environment expected for the Care Center Nursing Department and the resources that will be available to it. Decides what is to be accomplished within the dept., sets short-term goals and recommends long-term objectives, then decides on the means to be used for achieving them. Develops new ideas, combines old ideas to form new ones, acts as a catalyst to stimulate others to be as creative.

4. Meets with medical and nursing staff, and, as appropriate, other departments in planning nursing care services, programs and activities. Assists in developing, implementing and coordinating the department policies and procedures, patient care plans and nursing procedures.

5. Meets with departmental personnel as required/necessary, and solicits advice from inter‑departmental supervisors concerning the provision of nursing care services; assists in identifying and correcting problem areas, and/or improvement of services.

6. Prepares department budget proposal for submission to the Assistant Administrator and is responsible for the effective utilization and monitoring of the department budget. Meets regularly with Assistant Administrator to discuss departmental services and essential resources.

7. During emergencies can function as an RN Supervisor, Residential Nurse or charge nurse.

8. Supervises in the developing of nursing policies and medical records and other essential manuals of policies and procedures relating to nursing functions.

9. Works cooperatively with Director of ALC/RLC in coordinating staffing needs, staff development and resident needs.

Marginal Functions

1. Serves on various committees such as Quality Assessment and Assurance and Safety of the facility as required by existing regulations and as appointed. Evaluates and implements applicable recommendations from related committees and works with respective consultants as necessary to implement recommended changes. Obtains and conveniently provides appropriate reference materials for Nursing staff.

2. Reports and thoroughly investigates all incidents/accidents, unsafe and hazardous conditions and equipment immediately. Follows established safety rules and regulations. Maintains work area in a clean, orderly and safe condition. Works with HC Team in resident placement.

3. Regular attendance is an essential function of the job.

4. Ensures that residents' rights to fair and equitable treatment, self determination, individuality, privacy, property and civil rights, including the right to wage a complaint, are well established and maintained at all times.

5. Assists facility in maximizing 3rd party reimbursements.

6. Attends and participates in workshops, seminars and other professional activities to keep abreast of current changes, current standards and regulations, and professional standards in the health field, makes recommendations on changes in policy and procedures.

7. Reviews the nursing care requirements of each patient admitted to the facility, as may be required, and assists the attending physician or other medical professionals in planning for resident's care.

8. Receives, reviews, files, and conducts necessary inquiries relative to scheduled, mandated and special reports.

9. Assumes responsibility and participates during any fire and emergency drill in the facility.

10. Assures that staff, contractors, vendors, residents and visitors know and follow established policies and procedures. Performs all assigned duties in a professional manner, in accordance with established policies, procedures and practices.

11. Cooperates with co-workers and establishes good working relationships with all departments. Practices team building and promotes good employee relationships in the department and inter-departmentally.

12. Maintains confidentiality of appropriate employee and resident care information to assure their rights are protected.

13. Promotes the activity/recreation program.

14. Actively participates in standardizing the methods in which work will be accomplished.

15. Works with pharmacist on routine services, procurement of drugs, new information, etc..

16. Meets regularly with Rehabilitative.

17. Assure that the building and grounds are clean and maintained in good repair. Notifies maintenance and housekeeping of any problems.

18. Is on-call as necessary.

19. Serves as Director of Facility when Admin. and Assistant Administrator are away.

20. Works with Infection Control and Care Plan Coordinators as necessary.

Educational Requirements/Licenses/Certificates

Possess a current license to practice as a registered nurse in the state of North Carolina.

Skills, Abilities and Experience

At least three to five years experience as an RN charge nurse in a geriatric facility. Will have effective verbal, written communication and supervisory skills. Computer word processing, database and spreadsheet knowledge preferred. Should be fluent in English.
