Function of Position:

Reporting to the Program Lead of CSTEP, Tutors work with students to help them develop effective learning strategies and to become self-regulated learners. These tutors help students with discipline-specific content.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Foster the development of independent, intentional learners
  • Help students understand and use effective learning strategies
  • Provide tutor assistance in Biology in one-on-one and group settings
  • Develop and nurture rapport with students, peers, and faculty
  • Attend training activities to comply with tutoring requirements and expectations before and/or during semesters
  • Collaborate with the CSTEP Program Lead on providing workshops to fill learning gaps of both tutors and students with discipline-specific content. The CSTEP Program Lead will collaborate with the Biology Department as needed.
  • Adhere to tutoring center protocol and tutoring expectations as outlined in the Tutor Handbook
  • Promote critical thinking and problem solving
  • Help to identify and fill learning gaps with discipline-specific content
  • Tutors will log in daily in the tutoring sign-in binder

Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Must have earned a grade A in BIO 155, 156, and provide a letter of recommendation from a Biology Professor
  • Working towards Associates or Bachelor's Degree in Biology or a Biology-related discipline
  • Technology savvy
  • Experience working with diverse college populations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish, or other languages, proficiently


Additional Information:

Pay Rate: $20 hr.

Job Type: Part-time

Hours: 10-20 hours/week
