About This Position

First Look:

Every day, powerful institutions shape the lives of millions—often with little accountability. TheStreet is launching a groundbreaking national series that digs deep into the systems of power influencing American life.

This multi-part written and video series will shine a light on corruption, abuse of influence, and institutional failures across the country’s most powerful arenas — from government agencies and media to corporate empires and political networks.

Our goal isn’t simply to expose scandals, but to reveal patterns — how power is wielded, who benefits, who’s left behind, and how transparency can drive change. Each installment will pair rigorous reporting with human-centered storytelling that makes complex systems tangible for readers and viewers alike.

If you’re driven to ask hard questions, follow the money, and hold institutions accountable, this is an opportunity to join a team serious about truth-telling and impact.

Compensation: $1,500–$2,250 per story, depending on scope, experience, and format.

Please note: due to the volume of applications we receive, only applicants selected for consideration will be contacted.

What You’ll Do:

  • Pitch, report, and write deeply researched stories that expose systemic abuse, corruption, or unchecked power.

  • Develop sources, analyze data, and pursue original documents and interviews.

  • Work with editors, video producers, and designers to translate findings into compelling multimedia features.

  • Collaborate with legal and fact-checking teams to ensure accuracy and integrity.

  • Contribute to the editorial framing and ongoing evolution of the investigative series.

What You’ll Bring

  • A proven track record in investigative or enterprise journalism (print, digital, or broadcast).

  • Strong reporting instincts — comfort digging through records, chasing leads, and developing reluctant sources.

  • Ability to turn complex systems and data into engaging, accessible narratives.

  • Familiarity with public records requests, data journalism tools, or open-source research is a plus.

  • A passion for accountability journalism and the courage to pursue stories that matter.
