About This Position
Job Summary
The role of the Fitness Instructor is to monitor the fitness floor, providing professional instruction in assisting members. Assists members with exercise technique, offers encouragement, reinforces exercise behavior and safety, and answers all questions with a high standard of customer service. The Fitness Instructor also assists the front desk staff in managing front desk operations, including signing up new members, taking payments, laundry duties, and answering the phone in a professional manner. In addition, the fitness instructor assists in performing workout orientations for new members and give tours to prospective members in a positive, energetic manner.

Working Conditions
Primarily Works in a well-lighted and air-conditioned environment with period of heavy workload and stress. This role may include working in less-than-ideal home conditions, which can include exposure to extreme temperatures and environments that may not meet typical cleanliness standards such as clutter, unkept surfaces, and homes with pets. Works in various conditions.

Confidentiality: Adheres to established policies on privacy and security requirements for compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), as applicable by Shannon Policy.
Performance: Position Specific Essential Functions
- Adequately conducts workout orientations, develops individualized exercise programs, demonstrates proper equipment usage, and provides initial and ongoing assistance.
- Adequately roams the fitness floor, observing members and reinforcing exercise behavior and safety while demonstrating an inviting enthusiastic attitude towards members.
- Monitors and interacts with members to ensure proper and effective exercise techniques.
- Effectively spots members in free weight areas.
- Treats customers as the most important part of job.
- Listens to customer without interruption.
- Takes actions to appropriately and successfully address customer issues; effectively communicates with customers.
- Demonstrates respect for diverse cultures of all patients, families and co-workers.
- Reports any facility problems to immediate supervisor.
- Assists fellow employees when needed.
- Thoroughly assists with opening and closing procedures.
- Assists with health fairs, fitness talks, and club promotions as needed.
- Promotes all areas of the club in a positive manner.
- Is receptive to member needs, assisting with a high standard of customer service.
- Maintains a clean/safe work environment by keeping fitness area clean.
- Keeps water, cups, and towels stocked on fitness floor.
- Assists with laundry; Stocking towels, emptying laundry bins, starting laundry, and folding towels as necessary.
- Ensures equipment is functioning properly and reports problem to immediate supervisor if not.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
- Required
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
- Preferred
- Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science OR Kinesiology
Experience:
- Preferred
- One year of experience in the Health/Fitness Industry
Certification/Licensure:
- Required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
- Must obtain within six (6) weeks of start date
- Personal Training Certification
- Must obtain within eight (8) weeks of start date
- Personal Training Certification accepted through one of the following organizations: ACSM, ACE, AFAA, or NSCA, NASM, NPTA, ISSA, NESTA, SCW, or any organization that offers an accredited personal training certification
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
