Summary:
The Assistant Production Supervisor supports daily manufacturing operations, ensuring compliance with BRC, GMP, HACCP, and other regulatory requirements. This role assists the Production Supervisor in coordinating production activities, leading production personnel, and maintaining consistent product quality, safety, and efficiency.
The Assistant Production Supervisor is responsible for ensuring that all manufacturing, packaging, sanitation, and documentation activities meet company standards, customer requirements, and applicable regulatory guidelines. This position plays a key role in maintaining audit readiness, supporting continuous improvement, and fostering a strong culture of food safety and quality.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following, but are not limited to:
Production and Quality Operations
- Ensure products are manufactured, blended, packaged, and labeled in accordance with approved batch records, work orders, SOPs, GMPs, and BRC requirements.
- Review and verify batch records, blend sheets, process routers, and specifications prior to production.
- Conduct pre-production meetings with the production team to review batch requirements, critical control points, and documentation expectations.
- Assign production tasks and monitor execution to ensure compliance with quality, safety, and efficiency standards.
- Verify correct staging, issuance, and traceability of raw materials, including active ingredients.
- Monitor ingredient additions and blending activities to ensure accuracy and adherence to batch instructions.
- Assist in supervising and verifying completion of blending and processing steps, review and sign batch documentation.
- Ensure packaging line setup is compliant, including equipment preparation, line clearance, labeling verification, and palletization.
- Confirm completion and approval of in-process and finished product testing, including laboratory results and release documentation.
- Review completed batch records, retained samples, Certificates of Analysis (COAs), and lot traceability documentation.
- Ensure accurate and timely data entry into production, quality, and inventory systems.
GMP, BRC, and Food Safety Compliance
- Enforce GMP, HACCP, and BRC requirements throughout all production and packaging activities.
- Ensure sanitation and pre-operational inspections are completed by approved sanitation SOPs.
- Verify execution and documentation of daily, weekly, and as-needed cleaning and sanitation programs.
- Maintain strict adherence to allergen controls, foreign material prevention, and contamination prevention programs.
- Ensure proper use, storage, and documentation of cleaning and sanitation chemicals.
- Maintain the facility in a constant state of audit readiness for internal audits, customer audits, and third-party inspections (BRC, FDA, customer audits).
- Support investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective actions related to non-conforming products, deviations, or customer complaints.
Safety, Regulatory, and Environmental Compliance
- Assist in enforcing plant safety rules and OSHA requirements.
- Promote a strong safety culture and always ensure safe work practices.
- Support compliance with environmental, regulatory, and company safety standards.
- Ensure the facility is maintained in a clean, organized, and customer-ready condition at all times.
Planning, Scheduling, and Continuous Improvement
- Assist in monitoring production schedules and recommend adjustments to optimize efficiency and throughput.
- Review prior-week production performance and inventory levels to ensure alignment with production plans.
- Assist in identifying and implementing process improvements related to quality, productivity, and waste reduction.
- Perform and coordinate light maintenance, changeovers, and equipment setup as required.
Training and Employee Development
- Assist in training new and existing employees on GMPs, BRC requirements, production processes, equipment operation, documentation practices, sanitation, quality, and safety.
- Reinforce food safety culture and accountability among production personnel.
Leadership and Personnel Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day leadership, coaching, and guidance to production operators, including full-time and temporary employees.
- Support employee engagement, performance management, and development.
- Assist in resolving employee concerns through effective communication and problem-solving.
- Balance quality, safety, productivity, cost control, and employee morale to meet operational objectives.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Assist in supervising Production Operators, including regular and temporary employees.
- Assisting in training, assigning work, and ensuring compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
Qualifications:

Required Education and/or Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Two to three years of experience in a food, nutraceutical, or regulated manufacturing environment preferred.
- Prior experience in GMP- or BRC-certified facilities strongly preferred.
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to read, interpret, and complete batch records, specifications, SOPs, and inventory documents.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Ability to perform basic arithmetic and unit-of-measure conversions.
- Ability to calculate percentages, ratios, yields, and ingredient quantities accurately.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain strong attention to detail to ensure product quality, regulatory compliance, and accurate documentation.
- Ability to learn and use manufacturing and quality systems.
- Experience or aptitude with systems such as Microsoft Office, ERP systems (e.g., JDE), and document control systems (e.g., DocuWare).
Work Conditions & Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift/or move 55 pounds infrequently
- Work environment is normally on the production floor. Must be able to make frequent rounds in a warehouse environment
- Ability to stand for an extended period of time
- Must be able to wear any required PPE such as scrubs, hair net, lab coat, and facemask
- Ability to work in a packaging area with a moderate powder substance in the air with or without a respirator
- Ability to work above shoulders
- Other physical requirements include frequent squatting, bending, twisting, and bi-lateral wrist movement
- Ability to work around a variety of different smells and aromas
- Ability to adjust work schedule as business needs require.
- Ability to safely handle production equipment and stamina and endurance to perform physical functions throughout the day.
Quality/Safety Responsibilities:
