Crisis Counselor – Community Crisis Response

Heritage Behavioral Health Center – Serving Macon, DeWitt & Piatt Counties
Full-Time | Community Crisis Response | Second Shift (3 PM – 12 AM)

Salary
  • Bachelor’s Degree: $25.00/hour + every other Friday paid off
  • Master’s Degree: $60,000 annually + every other Friday paid off
  • Additional compensation available for CADC, LPC, LSW, LCSW, or LCPC
  • Shift Differential (2nd & 3rd Shift): $2.00/hour
    Salary is based on education, experience, and licensure/certification.

Heritage Behavioral Health Center is seeking compassionate, dedicated Crisis Counselors to join our expanding Community Crisis Response Team. This dynamic, community-based position provides rapid-response behavioral health support to individuals experiencing mental health or substance use crises.

Crisis Counselors respond in emergency departments, community settings, partner agencies, and client homes—meeting people where they are and providing life-changing support when they need it most.

What You’ll Do
  • Provide face-to-face, phone, and virtual crisis intervention to individuals across the lifespan
  • Respond to a wide range of crisis situations involving adults, adolescents, and children
  • Engage individuals admitted to inpatient psychiatric hospitals and support transition planning
  • Assist with involuntary admission processes at the Macon County Court
  • Complete pre-admission screening assessments for individuals needing higher levels of care
  • Coordinate with referral sources such as hospitals, law enforcement, schools, and partner agencies
  • Collaborate with internal teams—crisis clinicians, case managers, psychiatric providers, and leadership—to ensure timely, coordinated support
  • Document assessments, interventions, and follow-up in the electronic health record
What You BringKnowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to engage individuals experiencing high-stress, emotionally intense situations
  • Flexibility—crisis work is dynamic, and each day looks different
  • Working knowledge of behavioral health diagnoses and treatment approaches
  • Ability to support individuals with serious mental illness, substance use disorders, or co-occurring conditions
  • Understanding of psychiatric services, hospital systems, and community resources
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Clear, professional written and verbal communication
  • Ability to work independently in community settings while collaborating as part of a team
  • Ability to navigate electronic health record systems
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Commitment to professional development and continuous learning
Education & Requirements
  • Five (5) years of supervised experience in behavioral health
  • Bachelor’s degree in a human services field
  • Graduate degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or related field preferred
  • CADC, LSW, or LPC strongly preferred
  • Must obtain CADC or licensure (LSW, LPC) within 2 years of hire
  • Minimum 21 years of age
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and proof of auto insurance
  • Prior experience in crisis services strongly preferred
